The world lost a TV legend on Tuesday when Andy Griffith died at the age of 86 at his North Carolina home.

Before Griffith became a staple in American homes on The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock, however, the legendary actor actually enjoyed a successful stand-up comedy career.

Among Griffith's comedic masterpieces was his 1953 story What it Was, Was Football. The monologue delivered by Griffith is told from the point of view of a rural backwoodsman trying to figure out what is going on at a football game. Simple things that today's football fans are well aware of are called into question, and plenty of hilarity ensues.

As mentioned, Griffith eventually enjoyed a lengthy television career, but the football act will forever live on in classic comedy history.

  • I love this routine. My Dad used to belong to the Capitol Record Club and many years ago, he got the Andy Griffith 'Just For Laughs' album. This routine is on it (along with a whole lot of other great routines!) I've listened to it dozens of times and it's always funny!
  • god someone wrote something about he?//??
  • We are less without him. One thing about the man, you always felt that he was a decent human being with a good heart.
  • I enjoyed watching this gentleman on television. Never heard a cross word about him. A great actor. RIP
  • He reminded me of my DAD. What a great man I never met him yet I loved him actually my whole family did. He seemed like just a really stand up man. Which is very hard to find now a days. I will miss him greatly. I still watch the Andy Griffith show. Hope it never goes off the air.
  • He was a great, funny all around American. I will miss him.
  • I always felt that Andy was just like my father. I remember saying to someone one day that when we ever lose him it will be like losing my dad all over again and it has been.
Sound silly but sometimes we become so connected with people on TV and seeing them in person in NC at the Mayberry fiction town but felt like home.

I am mourning his death as i did my own fathers! Hope someone puts up his stand up routine on utube for all of us to see. God Bless You Andy! You and Dad can now talk about all the things you had in common. Except my Dad died 21 years ago and it least i still had Andy to fill in as him and what a role model he was! RIP Mr Andy Griffith & Daddy save me a seat. Your adopted daughted...Hearts are broken today! Missing you so much already!! God Bless All Who Loved This Dear Man...SPG
  • Well said. I still go to Mayberry on stressful days to calm my nerves and feel welcomed, loved and accepted. The world has lost a wonderful human being. Sleep well, Mr. Griffith.
