In a race to prove themselves to have the most troubled franchise, Cleveland has edged out Buffalo. This wouldn’t normally be an honor, but it becomes kind of a big deal when the prize is having a movie shot in your city.

As Larry Hartstein of CBSSports.com reports, director Ivan Reitman chose Cleveland as the site where he will film a football comedy called Draft Day. The movie is set to star Kevin Costner as the general manager of a poor football team who looks to the draft to find the players that will turn the franchise’s fortunes for the better.

Buffalo made a strong pitch to be the site of the film, but it was just not meant to be.

Reitman, the director, toured Ralph Wilson Stadium last month and seemed excited about shooting the movie in Buffalo, Clark told the paper. But despite incentives from New York state, it ended up being $3 million cheaper to film in Cleveland, a source told the paper.

Both the Bills and Browns have had quite the stretch of mediocrity over the past decade or so. The Bills currently boast the NFL’s longest streak of consecutive seasons without a playoff berth, having missed the postseason 13 straight seasons. Despite the drought the team has stayed relatively mediocre, having six seasons with at least seven wins in this stretch.

The Cleveland Browns franchise reemerged in 1999 after the original team was relocated and became the Baltimore Ravens in 1996. The Browns made the playoffs in 2002, losing a wild-card game to the division rival Pittsburgh Steelers. They did have one 10-win season in 2007, but could not lock up a wild-card spot.

While general manager Mike Lombardi looks to help the Browns turn a corner in the NFL, Kevin Costner will aim to bring some laughs to the big screen. Filming for Draft Day is slated to start this spring or summer.

The third podcast of the week and finally I gave Scott the chance to break down a few things. The idea was to give Scott the reigns to talk about MIT. I ended up feeling like I talked more than ever on one of these things. I don’t know if I should let you in on my secret, but the key to this whole podcasting thing is kind of just getting out of the way sometimes. (Shh. Don’t...

NFL News: Browns’ Michael Lombardi to have title changed to General Manager

It was a bit of a tongue twister for Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam to say “Vice President of Player Personnel” in the news conference when Mike Lombardi was hired. At least that’s what I assumed when he kept referring to Lombardi as the Browns’ new GM. Well, now it appears that the confusion will be gone as Pro Football Talk reports that the Browns will change it. Mike...

Joe Banner lengthens theoretical leash on Mike Lombardi to bring Ray Farmer on board as Assistant GM

So Joe Banner didn’t trust Mike Lombardi enough to name him the Browns General Manager when he hired Lombardi as VP of Player Personnel about a month ago, but had to let go of this carrot stick on Tuesday and start calling Lombardi a GM anyway because the title change was somehow necessary to bringing Ray Farmer over from the Chiefs to be the Browns’ new Assistant GM. NFL Free Agency Rumors: Will another NFL team give QB Vince Young another chance?

Former Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young thinks he deserves another shot at becoming a NFL quarterback. Many teams likely think otherwise. He burned his bridges in Philadelphia after joining the team and proclaiming the Eagles as the “Dream...

“Lights Out” for washed-up Merriman

Fittingly, like a bolt of lightning, Shawne Merriman’s career has come and gone in a flash. Sumlin: I'm not interested in kicking players off team

Texas and Texas A&M are in different conferences and apparently the school’s football coaches operate differently when it comes to player discipline, too.  Charlie Strong kicks players off his team, Kevin Sumlin likes to keep them around and turn them into men.
