It's no secret that the NFL is attempting to limit high speed collisions, especially as they pertain to kickoffs. Sean Gregory of TIME Magazine indicates in this week's cover story that Goodell is floating the idea that instead of kickoffs, the kicking team would be given the ball at their own 30 yard line with a 4th and 15 situation. Essentially, this is in an effort to give the "kicking" team a way to retain possession as the onside kick currently does. I'm not sure whether to call this blasphemy or innovation. The onside kick, ironically, is one of the few things keeping kickoffs in the game. By giving the "kicking" team the ball with a 4th and 15 situation, the onside kick would become obsolete. Unlike most ideas to eliminate the kickoff, I'm willing to play the wait and see game with this proposal. The one major criticism that I have is that it should be more like 4th and 20, making it more difficult to go for the first down. The innovation would also make end of the game scenarios far more interesting than the onside kick ever did. Don't look for the kickoff to vanish in the next year, but this could be a viable replacement to the kickoff, and I'm willing to consider it seriously. [follow]

  • In response to Roger Goodell no kick off change. Let us all remember--Football is a TACKLE GAME and when the officials enforce this RULE we will not have the injuries as body slamming on the blind side, clipping, head butting and etc. The NFL somehow has gotten off track here and these infractions MUST STOP You do not need rule nor game changes. Lets go back to a tackle game as it was intended from the beginning.
  • Seriously?

Everyone is and should be concerned about the safety of the players but this proposal is absurd. Removing the kick off would drastically change the dynamics of the game and forever alter special teams and for that matter an element of excitement to this sport we love.

Do not change this aspect of the game-

    Seriously!
  • Roger-your proctologist called. They found your head.
Seriously! This is not the game called "Goodell". It is called "football". If he keeps going this way, the sport will eventually become a game of catch between two people. How exciting is that? How many millions will be made off of that?
Fire Goodell before he ruins the sport any more!
  • Come on dude. Are you really this gullible? This is the press MAKING news. There will be no such change.

BTW, don't forget to leave cookies and milk out on Christmas Eve.
  • pearlnecklace : I could not agree with you any more. It is past time for the self named God to go. If left in place any longer he will totally ruin this game.

  • Folks, we are headed for flag football in the NFL.
  • Lets just put little flags on there side and play flag football. Come on this is the gridiron were men knock the **** out of each other. They know what could happen to them when the step foot on the field its like NASCAR drivers know the could get killed driveing 200 MPH. Make changes to the helments and other eqepment not the game.
  • Football is a contact sport and I'm all for safety, but if we keep changing the game we might as well watch flag football. Enforce existing rules don't create new ones to make the games slower and boring. If these players were concerned about contact they would have taken up a differt sport...or perhaps knitting.
  • if kickoffs are eliminated...the punt is the only kick in football? the upside is that soccer will become football and american football can become handball...oh wait, there is already another game with that name...
  • Who does he think he is? Bill France ruined Nascar with all the rules and regulations, now football is going by the wasteside. Safety is one thing but lets face it, most of the injuries are not on the kickoff. I've been a fan for over 60 years and hate to see a got game go bad because of some harebrained official..............
  • With all the changes recently it's not football anymore. It's patty cake ball. I realize something must be done to decrease the number of concussive injuries but the appeal of the game is the aggression and ferocity of play. In truth I much prefer the college game.
  • sounds like king roger will get his wish to protect everyone from injury, because if he keeps "whimping" up the game there will be no fans left and the game will go belly-up. lets be real folks. all these players know or should know the inherant risks of the game and the possibility of injury or death. just as firefighters, soldiers, cops and others with dangerous careers. whose going to soften up the risks for those folks? nobody! sad as it is, when injury or death occur, not one of these proffessionals is unaware of the risks. if you
don't want the risk don't take the job. fairly simple if you ask me.
  • Hey Goodell, remember when you would not give the referee's their money, was it not the fans who pushed your decision to bring them back? If you take away something apart of America's favorite game that has been A PART of this GAME since it got started what do you think will happen? Goodell you are a pansy, you my friend have no right to change the wonderful game of football, but I'm not worried because like the ref lockout that rule would not last or probably even become a rule at all because simply the FANS will overthrow you buddy. You need to realize its not what all you high and mighty executives that run the NFL want. ITS WHAT THE FANS WANT!
