Mike Westhoff might have retired, but he isn’t departing before dishing on everyone’s favorite subject: Tim Tebow.

Making an appearance on WQAM in Miami Friday, the longtime (and outspoken) Jets special teams coach classified Tebow’s role with the team as an “absolute mess.”

“It was a mess,” Westhoff said, via ProFootballTalk.com.  “It was an absolute mess.  You can say it however else you want, it was really a mess.  I was very, very disappointed.  There are things that Tim Tebow, as an NFL quarterback, he’s very limited in some things.  If you throw him in the middle of a drop-back passing offense, he will look very, very average at best.  But if you incorporate him in different facets of your offense, I think he can be a factor.  That’s what I felt we were going to do, but we never did it.

Westhoff, like the rest of us, was expecting to see Tebow lined up all over the field. It never materialized. His role as the personal punt protector on special teams was “supposed to only be a fraction, and it ended up being his only role.”

That fact left Westhoff with more questions than answers.

“I don’t think anyone’s ever really answered that question,” Westhoff said.  “Why didn’t we do it?  I honestly don’t know.  I know we didn’t practice it.  We didn’t practice it in training camp.  We were gonna unveil it.  Well, I’m still waiting for the unveiling.”

He concluded: “It was a distraction, and really a shame.”

Nail meet head.

Westhoff is one of the most respected coaches around the league, and this is why. Tebow was hyped up by the Jets all throughout training camp and preseason, with the Wildcat package functioning as New York’s super secret weapon.

Truth is, Tebow was baited along all year by the Jets. From his lack of playing time to phantom rib injury to being passed over — twice — for the starting quarterback job, the club completely botched the once-heralded acquisition.

Even if Tebow himself doesn’t want to admit it, the truth came out one last time.

  • I read the B- - l Sh-- the Jets coach had to say about Tbow. It struck me that you express yourself as a fool proof 100% expert and that YOU know every thing there is to know about Football to be a coach. What a dumb a-s. Why can't you win once in a while Mr. smart know it all. You need to set on the side lines for a while and watch a good ball game. Maybe Alabama's coach could show you a thing or two about FOOTBALL
  • Now Tebow is the scapegoat for the Jet's failures! That is pretty good! A guy warms the bench and still gets blamed for the loses on the field.

    What a pathetic organization.!
  • As a long suffering Lions fan who has actually attended games in the demolished Tiger Stadium and abandoned Pontiac Silverdome, please send Tim Tebow to Detroit. As evidenced by the Lions game record this year, Matthew Stafford can't do everything!!
  • Who did the Jets Coaching staff blame before Tebow, How many plays did he get into during the season the problem with the Jets is Rex Ryan and his band of flops his act is tiresome and is a disgrace to the coaching profession.
  • Tebow a distraction? Westoff clearly says he was not a distraction, but praises him in many ways:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yy2k3_fUITI
  • Tim Tebow is a proven winner on the field. He proved it
in Florida and Denver. We'll never know, because he didn't
get a chance to play. So the loser quarterback and loser
coach are still there. What's wrong with this picture???

Top 5 Things Tim Tebow Can Do With His Football Career

After coming off of a Cinderella-season with the Denver Broncos in 2011, Tim Tebow‘s 2012 campaign turned out to be just the opposite with the New York Jets. Tim Tebow’s Brother Shows Off His Christian Faith After Peyton Manning’s Loss

His brother can’t start for the New York Jets, yet Peter Tebow found time to relish the troubles of Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos. I’m not big on the Bible and His teachings, but isn’t the above tweet unbecoming of a good Christian man? (Peter got a preaching gig in suburban Denver because of his last name.) Oh, I get it, Tim Tebow was 1-0 in the playoffs for the Broncos...

Oh, What a mess for the Jets

It's amazing how fast can things change and if you're a Jets fan, you know what I'm talking about. The Jets have not only missed the playoffs in the last two seasons, but they have...
