Sometimes you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone and without Justin Smith the San Francisco 49ers defense immediately becomes average. Since Smith left the game in the second half against the New England Patriots, the 49ers defense has given up 76 points. Let me repeat that – 76 points! That is just pathetic. If Smith doesn’t return for the playoffs the defense has some major adjustments to make before they take on their first opponent. That opponent will likely be the same Seattle Seahawks that just dished out the biggest pounding the Niners have received since Harbaugh took over as head coach. They will be hungry for more and while the Niners will be ready for revenge and (hopefully) have home field advantage they will still need to step it up if they don’t want a repeat of what went down at Centurylink Field last Sunday.… Read more

With Manningham out, 49ers need others to step up

Mario Manningham limped through the locker room on crutches, holding a towel around his waist while trying to keep his head high and sport a smile. Jenkins could get opportunity this week

A.J. Jenkins' time is now. Following Sunday's season-ending knee injury to Mario Manningham, the 49ers' first-round pick finally figures to be a part of a game plan. Mario Manningham Done For Season

San Francisco receiver Mario Manningham's season came to an end in Week 16 after suffering an ACL injury.Fantasy Spin:Manningham wasn't a reliable every-week performer with Alex Smith or Colin Kaepernick under center. Beat-up Niners regrouping into season finale

Jim Harbaugh kept his sentences short and information at a minimum Monday, repeating a phrase he will rely on following the worst loss of his NFL coaching career: regroup, refit and reorganize. That's all the 49ers can do at this point.

Sumlin: I'm not interested in kicking players off team

Texas and Texas A&M are in different conferences and apparently the school’s football coaches operate differently when it comes to player discipline, too.  Charlie Strong kicks players off his team, Kevin Sumlin likes to keep them around and turn them into men. That seems to be the opinion of the Aggies’ coach, anyway.  Sumlin said it’s easy to kick a guy off the team...
