Michael Vick recently restructured his contract with the Philadelphia Eagles to make it more cap-friendly, and early indications are that he will have yet another chance to resurrect his career now that Chip Kelly is running the show. As we know, Kelly’s spread offense at Oregon relied on having a mobile quarterback. If he is looking to recreate that approach at the NFL level, Vick could be a valuable asset in Philly.

How valuable? In an appearance on “Mike and Mike in the Morning” on Tuesday, Vick said he will be looking to regain his status as one of the “elite” quarterbacks in the league when the 2013 season begins. And he’s setting his sights high.

“In 2006, I ran for 1,000 yards — and it wasn’t hard,” Vick said, via Pro Football Talk. “I feel like I still can do that … Once you start trying not to get hurt, that’s when you get hurt. I think I have to go out, play lights-out football, and not worry about getting hurt.”

Health will obviously be the biggest concern, as usual. Kelly insists that Vick and second-year quarterback Nick Foles will have an open competition for the starting job during training camp, but Vick is owed a base salary of $7 million in 2013 with his new deal. That’s the type of money a starter earns — not a backup. Assuming he does win the job, Vick feels as though he and Kelly will be effective together.

“I could tell that he was innovative, and that’s what it’s all about in this league,” Vick said of Kelly. “You have to be able to change up from week to week and I think Chip will be able to do that. I think I can handle that.”

The question is can his body handle it. That 2006 season with the Atlanta Falcons that Vick referenced is the only time in his career he has played in all 16 games. However, you could argue that Kelly’s run-and-gun offense will help protect Vick from taking some of the hits he took last year while standing in the pocket. Spread offenses can mask poor offensive line play and leave quarterbacks less susceptible to big hits. The prospect of Kelly and Vick paired together is exciting, even if history isn’t on Vick’s side.

  • Oh Gawd, Vick is sounding much like Jermichael Finley here... A lot of talk, a lot of buttering up his own ego about being elite. Thing is, the rest of us don't see it that way...

Finley kept talking about how elite he was also, while blaming his problems with dropping footballs on Rodgers (the sort of QB Vick here is not) and "lack of chemistry". People heckled. Well in much the same way, many of us never really did see Vick as actually being elite, in the first place. Outside the player's own mind/imagination that is...

  • so Vick's gonna play "lights out" football? Well, I'll be DOGGONE if I didn't think he used that approach for everything else he does!!!! ELITE QUARTERBACK?? He is not a MANNING! Oh,wait....I bet he was referring to FANTASY FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!
  • i say vick go for it. hope you make it. hope you play well and have fun doing it. hope your entire team has great success. life's too short to be bitter about someone's success.
  • 1000 feet
  • Note to Vick: What you did seven years ago has no bearing on what you do next year on. You were a whole lot faster then. I think now you would be hard-press to outrun your linemen!
  • Can't wait to see the schedule! Vick needs to get into condition-they are coming after him! What are the odds he makes it thru the first 6 games before he gets an arm or rib injury? It is fun to watch the defense play against him-where is bounty gate when you need it?!
  • so the dog killa went from dynasty last year to a thousand yards this year , just cant keep his yap shut

Lovie Smith: 2-9 Bucs are still in playoff contention

Tweet Just how bad has the NFC South been this season? So bad that at 2-9, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are just 2 games out of first place. Because they are a couple wins away from playoff contention, Bucs head coach Lovie Smith sees no reason to evaluate younger players in the final month of the regular season. “We’re two games out of first place,” Smith said Monday...

Paul Pierce: Celtics' Big Three was like 'Holy Trinity'

The last few years haven’t exactly been kind to the Boston Celtics. But it wasn’t too long ago that wins at TD Garden were as common as traffic on I-93.   Prior to the 2007-08 season, the Celtics signed free agents Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, who teamed up with Paul Pierce to form the celebrated “Big Three.” The trio won nearly 70 percent of its games over...

Let me start this off by saying I like Jon Lester and think he’s an excellent pitcher, but if this latest report is true, Theo Epstein and the Chicago Cubs have officially lost their minds.
