Far from a surprise, quarterback Nate Montana, son of 49ers legend Joe, went unselected in this weekend’s draft. The 49ers, though, have decided to throw a bone to the oldest son of the quarterback who helped them win four Super Bowls.

It’s not a contract offer, however, but the team has reportedly sent an invitation to the younger Montana to attend the team’s rookie minicamp in two weeks. It’s only nothing more than a try out, but Montana is hopeful he can turn the opportunity into a contract:

That’s what he and his agent, Marty Magid, are concentrating on now, and their hope is that the 49ers offer him a deal after the minicamp. Magid said other, unnamed teams also have shown interest in Montana and that he was trying to secure an invitation for one of the rookie minicamps being held during the upcoming weekend, May 3-5. “A couple of teams have asked about him,” Magid said. “We’ll find out this week.”

Montana also recently worked out for the Niners during a local pro day for athletes who grew up or played college ball in the area. He was a vagabond in college, playing for four different schools, including his old man’s alma mater Notre Dame and, amusingly, the University of Montana, before winding up at someplace called West Virginia Wesleyan, a D-II school where he finally got a shot to start last season during his senior year. He posted a 51.6 completion percentage.

Montana never started while he was in high school at De Le Salle in Concord. And it was the same for a solid majority of his collegiate career, even while at a JC. Now, he’s milked his name all the way to a shot at the NFL. But we’re willing the wager he sees less NFL camps than he did colleges.

John Beilein upset with ESPN for late start time to game

Games starting at 10pm ET? Ridiculous. Staying up until after midnight does no fan any good, and it’s all ESPN’s fault The evil four-letter network is ruining the games we all love. At least those are some of the rants we’ve heard from fans in the past regarding football and basketball game times fit to television windows and not fan convenience. After Tuesday night’s loss...

Fred Jackson has 'no respect' for Donte Whitner

Former Buffalo Bills safety Donte Whitner, now a member of the Cleveland Browns, faces his old team this Sunday, but it certainly looks like he'll be getting no love from the Bills' home crowd, and especially not from running back Fred Jackson.
