Via Steelers Depot:

According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pittsburgh Steelers organization is very upset with the NFL's threat to take away or modify draft choices as a result of the penalty given to head coach Mike Tomlin for his Thursday night sideline incident.

"There is no precedent for it," per a team source, Dulac reported.

It's not surprising that the Rooney family, if that is indeed who the team source is referencing, would be upset and they are right when they say there is no precedent for a draft pick to be modified or taken away due to Tomlin's actions that resulted in the head coach receiving a $100,000 fine on Wednesday.

The New York Jets were fined $100,000 nearly three years ago when then-strength coach Sal Alosi tripped Miami Dolphins cornerback Nolan Carroll on the sideline as he was covering a punt in the third quarter. Alosi was also fined $25,000 by the league for his actions.

At no time during the Jets incident was there ever talk about them having a draft pick modified or taken away.

  • the Steeler penalty SHOULD be worse than the jet one...obviously the lesson sought to be conveyed by the Jets' antics didn't teach the Steelers anything. Move them down about 5 spots on lets say their second pick...
  • maybe this is a good time to send a message to the rest of the teams & coaches that "stupid" antics like this won't be tolerated, sometimes you have to put your foot down to get their attention & I think this "would".. :)
  • Mike Tomlin is an old Pro, he's been in this game too long not to know the rules of the game. Yes he knew he was violating, he stood their deliberately to distract Jacoby's play move, didn't you see that devilish grin on his face called, "how you like that" grin on his face? They need to not only fine him $100,000 but what ever else the NFL is legally able to do to him just because he thought it was funny .
  • I totally agree with you, but I would also blame the referees, too. Tomlin's actions clearly prevented a TD. The penalty, therefore, should have been to award the TD to the other team. Many, many years ago in the Cotton Bowl, and I cannot remember the teams, a player was running for a TD on the sidelines by his opponents' bench. One of his opponents jumped off the bench and tackled him. Then he sneaked back onto the sidelines. The refs caught him and awarded the runner the TD. Oddly, no one thought much about it. The two players later appeared on the Ed Sullivan show.
  • TOO B A D pitt.
  • He should be fired. No place in the sport for crap like this...
  • As a Steeler fan, I could not agree more with you. This guy is a jerk and is bringing down the Steeler organization.
  • Your no steeler ........STFU!!!
  • Tough, Steeler Nation. Get over it. Your coach pulled a dumb-ass move and now it's time to pay the piper.
  • THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED IF IT WOULD HAVE BEEN ANY OTHER TEAM MIKE TOMLIN WAS WATCHING THE BIG SCREEN DIDN'T INTERFER WITH ANY PLAYS THE NFL JUST LIKE PICKING ON THE STEELERS NEED TO GET A NEW NFL LEADER THIS ONE STINKS
  • Didn't interfere??? Are you serious?? It caused Jacoby to change directions into a defender that stopped the play. Tomlin "claimed" he was watching the jumbotron and not paying attention...Really?? Precisely what was on the jumbotron??? It was a purposeful action on his part. Steelers and fans need to quit whining!
  • You are obviously a Steeler fan. I can tell by the squealing. I hope the NFL sticks it to the Steelers just like the Ravens did.
  • I hardly call a 2 point win "sticking it to them".
  • Ravens are going to the playoffs. Steelers are staying home.
  • The scavengers are a joke........You scum-bags have two so called super bowls in 20 years......Steelers -6 and counting......Most in the NFL.....Play on that trailer trash...........LOL!!
  • Dude, if you believe that it wasn't a deliberate move I've got some swamp land ehem I mean waterfront property to sell you. Please, he was facing the jumbo screen but was looking out of the corner of his eye to see where the runner was. Curiously while standing still he stepped right to go left (if he were moving at the time to switch direction it may make sense to step right 1st, but not from a stand still) AT THE EXACT SECOND the guy was there. Plus as pointed out above he had a sh*t eating grin on his face after it happened, 100% absolutely on purpose END OF STORY. Should the punishment be to take a draft pick away is what is debatable, NOT the actual crime.
  • Only a girl would write that.
  • To WVGirl...please tell me what pills you are on so my doctor can prescribe them to me...yes, Tomlin WAS watching the monitor so he could see just how close he could get to the play. It was no doubt an intentional act and his actions before and after support that FACT!

Now, I immediately said the commissioner should fine him $100,000 to make a point and gladly he did just that. But, taking away draft picks or adjusting positions, is too far...no way this should ever happen.

I am a Falcons fan so no dog in this fight (sorry Vick haters, no pun intended).
  • Sometimes extreme measures are warranted when there is a point that has to be made, when past situations were unable to get the point across to all parties involved.

This would definitely get the attention of the entire entity and all parties impacted by such a action. Do it! I would bet the bank that this will never be an issue again.
  • NFL needs to backoff
  • that is going to far. I believe that is going to far to just take a draft pick. I think fine is good and if anything suspend the person responsible for the move.
  • LMAO at all of you jealous idiots. move thier pick back, it won't matter. The Steelers will be back on top soon enough while your crappy team continues to suck donkey dick
  • Steelers are a bust. Big Ben is a rapist.
  • Roger Gödel is an idiot!
  • "There is no precedent for it,"

As soon as they do it, there will be. Problem solved.
  • Take the 100k out of Mike's pocket and move on.
  • Considering Tomlin claims to have been standing ON THE FIELD to watch the jumbotron, there is NO WAY he didn't see that Jacoby JOnes was running up a sideline! Those Jumbotrons at M&T BAnks Stadium are HUGE and crystal clear! You can see EVERYTHING on the jumbotron from anywhere on the field, no need to strain to see the screen in Baltimore. Then there was the 10 minute smirk! Tomlin is SUPPOSED to be a professional. Hes' a HEAD COACH for goodness sake, not a substitute teacher. NO ONE should even be ON the yard-wide white sideline stripe, let alone step ON THE FIELD WHILE THE BALL IS IN PLAY! He KNOWS THAT, and he and the Steelers need to be held accountable. Hell, it took the NFL 5 days to take any action, and a mere $100,000 from Tomlin isn't enough!
  • JEALOUS FANS OF OTHER SO CALLED TEAMS THE ONLY WAY THE RAVENS CAN WIN IS TO CHEAT OR HURT SOMEONE
  • GOODELL NEEDS TO GET A LIFE OBVIOUSLY OUT OF THE NFL
  • Maybe next time you will think about where you are standing.
  • This is a two issue thing. 1) Theres no doubt in my mind that Tomlin knew what he was doing. You don't react or get out of the way by taking a step FURTHER out onto the field. What was he doing on the stripe in the first place and the second he did it he started smiling/laughing about it. None of these are the reaction of a person who made a mistake. 2) However that said I do not believe the NFL has the right to arbitrarily add something to the penalty procedure. There needs to be a warning about doing it before it's done. It don't think they will anyways. I think THIS situation WAS the warning for the rest of the league. The next time draft picks will be assessed. Exterior influence to a player is the MOST dangerous thing that can happen on the field. If the Rooneys are upset about the talk then maybe they should do something to deal with the CAUSE of the talk!! What Mr. Tomlin did was despicable, his reaction worse!
  • Messiers Alosi, Carroll[and those envolved in "Spygate"] are not Black. American history is abound with examples of duplicity: Yeah - I played it!!!
  • He's not smiling now is he!!!!!
  • Tomlin was fined for his actions. I still feel as if it may not be enough. His actions were despicable. The Steelers should be punished also.
  • My God are you an ignorant person. You OBVIOUSLY either didn't see the play or are functioning retard. Really, you are giving the few women that actually have any knowledge of football a bad name. Jealous fans, OF WHAT A rapist QB and a cheating coach. You're right, the Ravens won the Super Bowl by cheating, right!!! You're also giving WV a bad name. Go back to sc*wing your brother and uncles and leave football talk to people who actually know WTF they are talking about. BTW- I'm not a Ravens fan just a football fan.
  • You'd be whining like a ***** if the Ravens did it to the Steelers! Hypocrites!
  • Steeler fans showing their ignorance for their lousy cheat team. Typical Steeler Trash. Can't cheat without the refs. All of the Steelers SB's seem to be tainted. How did the Ravens cheat, Moron?
  • The Patriots lost a draft choice because of Belichick and what he did - other teams were doing it the prior year. The NFL sent out a directive to stop doing it Belichick evidently thought he was above it and got fined and thus a loss of draft pick. The Steelers and other teams the week before this game were warned by the NFL of coaches being too close to the side line. This is why they most likely will lose a draft pick - typical thumbing of the nose by a coach to the NFL.
  • The Steelers should secede from the league.
  • I have trouble with most NFL coaches & players trying to downplay, Tomlin's sideline antics. The coach saw what was happening, waited till Jacoby Jones was right next to him, even peeking to his right, took a step on the field that made Jones turn the play inside where he was caught right away. If Jones continues to tip toe the sidelines, I think he scores. So when was the last time a coach assisted on a tackle. I can't remember, the coach & team need to be punished.
  • I can't believe he's not suspended. Coaches interfering with gameplay should not be tolerated.

Corey Brewer: We got our butt kicked, it was embarrassing

The Houston Rockets might be better served to start their offseason early rather than showing up for Game 4 against the Golden State Warriors. Even if Houston forces Game 5, it appears the series is all but over. Rockets guard Corey Brewer’s thoughts after his team backed itself into an 0-3 series hole on Saturday...Read More

Brian Kelly hints Notre Dame will have fast offense

Get ready for a really fast-paced offense, Notre Dame fans.  Fighting Irish coach Brian Kelly implied today that his offense, now led by Malik Zaire, will be very up-tempo this season.  Kelly thought of his offense while watching the Indy 500.  Thought while watching the Indy 500… If you think this is fast, wait until you see our offense next year. pic.twitter.com/cWCLGEbELO...

John Madden: Last play of Super Bowl will 'torment' Pete Carroll

In the sports world some losses cause more anguish than others. The old saying that losing by one point in the last second is more hard to handle than being blown out by 35 rings true in some cases. We have absolutely no idea what is going through the mind of Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll months after his team dropped a heart breaker in Super Bowl XLIX against the New...

Cristiano Ronaldo nets hat trick, sets career high for goals

Cristiano Ronaldo needed three goals in Saturday’s game in order to surpass his career high of 60 goals in season. That would be a heavy task for many, but not for the Real Madrid superstar.   Before the half of the season finale against Getafe ended, Ronaldo netted a hat trick, bringing his goal tally this year to 61, with 48 of those coming in La Liga matches...
