Earlier this week, a report speculating that a current NFL player is “strongly considering” coming out as gay within the near future created a lot of buzz. There are many people who feel an openly gay NFL player would not be accepted among his teammates, while others insist that coming out would be a brave act that would help pave the way for equality. Seattle Seahawks defensive end Chris Clemons believes gay NFL players should remain quiet.

“Who on Gods earth is this person saying he’s coming out of the closet in the NFL?” Clemons wrote on Twitter Tuesday.

Following that question, Clemons made it clear that he feels it would be a bad idea for a player to admit that he’s gay:

It’s easy to understand why his comments were seen as offensive. However, Clemons later insisted that he would have no problem with a gay teammate and is not homophobic — he just thinks personal stuff like that should be left at home:

Basically, Clemons is trying to say that no player should talk about their sexual preference or anything that pertains to it. If he’s not homophobic but thinks gay athletes should remain in the closet, he must also believe players have no business talking about women they have dated. We all know that would never happen, since many players do things like openly discuss their relationships and post pictures of their girlfriends on Twitter.

Again, we have a player who reaffirms why gay NFL players are afraid to come out. And it’s not just football, as this former MLB pitcher made a very similar argument about gay baseball players. Players like Brendon Ayanbadejo continue to fight for equal rights, but comments like the ones we heard from Chris Culliver and the ones Clemons made prove there are still obstacles to be dealt with.

  • This world has become a really sad immoral place, a modern day Sodom & Gomorrah. Everyday you hear about homo's and "rights" and there wanting society to "accept" there lifestlye as "normal", and anyone who don't is labeled as "igornant" or a "biggot" The FACT is there lifestyle is far from NORMAL. The bible clearly states that homosexualty is wrong in God's eyes and there practice is " CONTRARY TO NATURE". God is not going to change his position this and I'm thankful He won't. Hono's can change, but if they don't there will be consequences.
  • I agree with much of what you say oldpackerfan. But my take on this is simple. I don't need to know what someones sexual preference is. It should not be publicized or talked about in the media. Whatever consenting adults do behind closed doors is their business. If they are judged harshly by God then they brought it on themselves. But I for one am tired of hearing about it and just wish people would keep their preferences to themselves. After all, we can only decide for ourselves how to live, we should not be deciding for others.
  • I disagree with what you both say, you must remember that every person deserves to be treated equally and fairly. How fairly or equally treated is a person who is gay or lesbian treated if they have to keep their love hidden from the world. Hetero's flaunt their love everyday by holding hands, kissing and groping in public, but the gay community has to keep it "in the closet." Come on! I am not gay and don't agree with it, but as the saying goes, the heart wants what the heart wants. Now, I don't want my kids, or myself for that matter, seeing publicly obscene displays of affection from anyone, because there is a time and place for that for anybody, but to tell a certain group of people they need to keep it hidden over another is wrong. Perhaps this player should not openly admit to being gay by having a news conference, because that may pose distractions to the team as Clemens says, but what difference would it make if he was seen in public, like any other hetero male walking hand in hand with his partner, or giving his loved one a big smooch as we all do in public on occasion. As far as the bible or any religion is concerned, let people be judged by the one to judge. If they are meant to live a life in hell so be it. All religions teach tolerance, yet the religious show no tolerance.
  • I don't need to know what someones sexualpreference is. It has zero affect on my life.
  • The world has evolved into what it is because we are all animals. Following what some people wrote to control the population thousands of year ago is ridiculous. But, you just keep on believing in your happy littl fairy tale and I will let you know when thumbilina shows up.
  • What do I think? I'm for equality per se but not in gay rights. To each his own, but I still feel it's an abnormality. And to be expecting equal rights is just carrying everything too far. I would not want to be sitting on a supreme court right now.
  • You dont beleive in gay rights huh? I'm a straight man that does believe in them, because they f@ckin exist, unlike a man that supposedly walked on water. Let me know when your white hood and robes come out of the dryer.
  • Well if it walks like a duck...ignorant and biggot fit pretty well.

...And the Bible is not clear on the subject at all. Only your spun and uneducated interpretation says so.

Coming out may not be a good idea, but not for the reasons you or Clemons have stated. I used to be a big Clemons fan, not so much anymore.
  • Leviticus 18:22; Romans 1:27; 1 Corinthians 6:9; 1 Timothy 1:10; Jude 1:7. God is REAL CLEAR on this subject. Love the sinner hate the sin. But don't think Chris meant it in this light. This "community" thinks they deserve equality, Chris is in his right to speak his mind. We're either for God or against Him. It's not for any of us to judge another. I don't think Chris is judging the person, just saying saying there is a time and season to all things. Well done Chris.
  • Who T F care what T F the bible says? Whatever T F you want or anyone else wants to believe can be contrived in some way shape or form from the iron-age babble in the bible.
  • Mr. Clemons minght want to concider leaving His African American heritage at home.It wasn't to long ago that people of a diffent heritage wre told to do the same thing.Diversity among all in any race, creed,or orientation.
  • Please don't use the black struggle to make a point about homosexuality. You can't take off a skin tone. while I don't believe in homosexuality, I do believe people have the right to love who they want to. I'm not God and I will leave the judging to him. But one thing that I must say is, I do believe personal relationships and business should be kept out of the game. I hated it as a kid when I found out my favorite players were a womanizers, drug addicts, or pricks. It put chinks in their armors and changed how I viewed them.
  • Another example of irresponsible journalism. Clemons made it clear, by this player coming out, it would be a distraction to the team. It's those of you that cannot read beyond the word 'gay' that are calling him a homophobe. If a player came out in the NFL, it would be a fxcking circus, and some players just want to play football. When one player puts themselves above the team, it works against 'the team'. I get it, and I agree, and I am in no way, no shape, no how, homophobic. Kudos to Chris for saying something intelligent. Shame on those of you that are putting words in his mouth and judging him for your own inability to understand his reasoning.
  • Some players want to just play football? Then just f*ckin play footbal! Dont worry about who anothr player wants to bump naughty part with. I'm sure there are players out there that are banging trannies on the road and his teammates know about it. Who the hell cares who anyone has sex with? Just play the goddamn game. Putting themselves above the team by saying who they are attracted to? So wait, do I kill myself or do you? Because we both cant be on this planet together. A person coming out in no way says they are better than the team. Someone coming out in the NFL is nowhere near what ochocinco, owens, moss, or burress have done to their teams. Argument debunked with those players alone.
  • I've learned that when don't say something that is agreeing with homosexuality you are a bigot. I actually support gay rights but If i type that I don't agree with certain aspect, then I am labeled a bigot.
  • I really don't came if the man is gay or straight as long as he's a good player. For all the bible thumping comments that were posted here you sound like old bigots.
