Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Tim Tebow was less than stellar under center.

The Patriots conducted their first training camp practice on Friday, and Tebow, operating at quarterback, didn’t have the best outing, according to multiple reporters.

Tom Curran of Comcast SportsNet New England says that Tebow looked “horrendous,” throwing a one-hop pass and an interception in back-to-back sequences.

The New York Post’s Bart Hubbuch notes that a “wounded-duck screen pass” had the crowd “groaning and laughing.”

To be fair, it wasn’t all bad for the former Jets’ punt protector.

Tebow caught some passes in drills and lined up with the running backs and receivers. The highlight of his morning came on a 40-yard run, which helped get the crowd “back on his side.

“I think that we’ll use Tim wherever we feel like he’s best for the team and I know that’s what he’s committed to doing as well, whatever that is,” head coach Bill Belichick said, via CBSBoston.com.

Not exactly a huge vote of confidence there. Tebow is hardly a lock to make the Patriots’ final roster, and can’t afford to have too many more days like today.

  • I'm not a big t-bow fan, but com'on, it's the first day of practice...
  • heres to ya bob,, cant believe all the "were going to take the word of a sports reporters that T-Bow sucked.. hell between sports reporters. politicians and lawyers.. you have so much opinion ( and no facts to base it on) or just plain lies that you would think T-Bow would not make the local high school team.. think some folks forgot just how good he really is..
  • Give me a break. The reason the sports reporters say he sucks is because Tebow SUCKS!! Get over it. Even the scouting reports on this guy says he sucks. If that's not good enough for you just watch his game play. There are quarterbacks twice as good as he is who have been cut.
  • Then why is you genius coach wasting any time with this guy. Why would BB want to even look at someone that EVERYONE knwos sucks?
Also if there are in your opinion better QBs that got cut but he didn't, why is he still on the field and they are home playing golf?
You completely contradict yourself becuase you are a jaded HATER.
  • bobcarp has taken the words right out of my mouth. I mean, how many athletes are in top form, during the first practice? I know that hall of famer, Troy Aikmann wasn't in top form, playing first string, his entire first year!

    GIVE THE MAN A BREAK!
  • I think your point would be valid if Tim Tebow was a first year QB. The fact of the matter is, he's not. I think he could have a long and successful career as an H-hack, hybrid tight end, or whatever you want to call the position. His PR people need to stop telling him he is an elite caliber QB, they are just wasting his talent as a superior athlete. Also, comparing him to Troy Aikman is doing a disservice to Troy Aikman.
  • The guy is NOT a QB, please, please, PLEASE can someone understand that. He won't but can some coach finally, finally get it and once and for all let the NFL be rid of this guy? Please someone, anyone... free the NFL from Tim Tebow.
  • How about freeing the internet of narrow minded nitwits like you?
  • How about you stop being such a tough guy that hasn't seen the football field since middle school when you had 4 touchdowns there Al Bundy!! Aim111, guys like you are the epitomy of jacka$$es on the internet. You would get creamed out on that field, hence why you're such a douche hiding behind a computer!!
  • Aim111 is an arm chair wanna be and self professed critic that knows everything.....what an idiot
  • 2468 11 Remember when Tebow said he was 'training' heavily and had gained muscle weight. I think, and I've said this before; TEBOW needs an MRI on his left throwing shoulder. He could have inadvertently torn his rotator cuff which would account for a stellar collegiate passer turning into someone who throws "ducks" "wobblers" is "off target", etc.
Something is seriously seriously wrong. Hey TIM get that MRI; I'm serious man. He is a better player than this! 20 18 26 5 hike

  • I think you better learn to hit the Loo when you take a piss. After THAT accomplishmement you MAY re-join this conversation on a probationary time table. Practice, pee! practice, pee! watch out! you just hit your shoes!!!!
  • I agree with him....what did the Pats expect when they signed him? He is not an NFL caliber QB and that is the bottom line. These teams are not doing him any good by signing him. This is his 3rd team in 3 years and he still can't play. The Pats are setting him up to fail and the best thing he could do is realize he isn't an NFL QB and do something else. I'm sorry if that hurts anyone's feelings but it's the truth!
  • Hey JanJ58-You didn't hurt my feelings. You are just plain wrong. As I recall, Brady was somewhere around the #7 QB spot at Michigan and was back-up to Bledsoe until that fateful day. Oh, and let's not forget Denver won 8 straight games and landed in the play-offs behind a "...not an NFL caliber QB...". Denver screwed Tebow when they traded him to the Jets and brought in Manning. That little move cost them a cool $92 million. Then the Jets gave him little field time behind the LOSER Sanchez who led them to an impressive (not) 6-8 record. He needs to be on the field as much as possible to get his confidence and his ability up to par. If you remember Top Gun, after Goose was killed and his confidence waned, Viper kept him flying. OK, that's Hollywood, but you get the idea. Maybe being in New England will kick his ass into gear and he will do just fine.
  • The Pats were looking to the future. Brady can't play for another 10 years, but with proper coaching, in the four or five that Brady has left, Tebow could be their next franchise QB. If teams would take these decent college QBs and stop trying to make them starters (most can't do it) and put them into a rotation where they could get a few snaps each game and LOTS of coaching and practice, they'd develop solid QBs who perform every Sunday. Many sports reporters consider Roethlesberger to not be an elite QB, but other than Brady and Aaron Rodgers, which active QB has more Superbowl victories? These teams are about winning. Some try to do it the fast way, by buying top talent. Who may or may not be able to keep it up. Others do it the slow way, by building a team of players who are solid performers at every position. How many undrafted players have the Steelers picked up and made look like star athletes by coaching and developing them? Ever hear of Willie Parker? He'll probably never make the Hall of Fame for his career numbers but, at one point in time, he held the record for longest TD run in a Superbowl. For that matter, Terry Bradshaw was the backup QB at LSU behind the guy who founded Duck Commander duck calls, but Terry's in the Hall of Fame now.
  • So we're going to take some douche new england reporter's comments/pathetic opinion as actually reflecting reality? GMAFB....these guys have been making fun of Tebow for years. He could take the team to the SB and they would still insist he sucks.....
    Get a life losers.
  • You are such a troll, Aim111.
What does that even mean, "can some coach finally get it..."?
Can one coach call out a player and say, "Nope. You're no good. You're out of the league." Maybe if you can begin to formulate rational thoughts, you can start criticizing professional football players. Maybe.
  • He seemed to play okay at Denver. Denver blew it when they got rid of Tebow and now the Pats are going to capitalize on their mistake. They're going to put him into a backup role and play him as a tight end in the interim. I may dislike Belicheck, but he's no idiot. He sees raw talent there and knows that with proper coaching, Tebow will be an excellent backup should Brady get hurt. Tebow is also over 10 years younger than Brady meaning that when Brady is ready to retire, the Pats could have a VERY able replacement sitting in the wings with all of the knowledge and skills developed ready to go.
  • Tim Tebow has so many good/great qualities has a human being & athletic talent, unfortunately, he doensn't have what it takes to be a QB in the NFL. He is such a good role model for kids & adults alike, I hope the Patriots find him a spot on their roster.
  • I like him as Vrabel the Second.
  • Then why would the self proclaimed patriot coaches as the best coaching team ever waste time with someone that "everyone knows just plain sucks". A prudent coaching team wouldn't waste their time of this was true, so the only conclusion I come to is the haters just hate someone getting attention. There is no other explanation. Quit your hating and get over it. Cripes!.
  • Maybe indoor football would be better for him
  • No surprise at all.

The Patriots wasted time and money and could have had another player to fill that roster spot and allowed a "nobody else wanted" has been to extend his career another 15 minutes.

    SMH.
  • I read your comment. Here's what I have to say: SMH.
    See how annoying that is?
  • Okay...his performance is being compared to the starting quarterback which is.....TOM BRADY. Come on, guys. Did anyone seriously think Tebow was going to challenge for the starting QB job? We all know why Tebow is in camp. Belichick is going to try to convert him to some kind of hybrid tight end/slot receiver...which is a real need nowadays with the departure of Welker and the impending prison sentence of Hernandez. Tebow may not be an NFL caliber QB, but he is a heck of an athlete.

The thing is this....if Belichick can't convert him to another position, Tebow's career is done. Tebow knows that. Give the guy some time. If he can't blossom under Belichick, then he never was going to blossom as a player.
  • I absolutely agree. While Tim has stated in the past that he wants to play quarterback - period - I think Belichick can help him see the light by turning him into a serious weapon who really adds an exciting element to their team. If Belichick can put him in a position where he is really valuable, I think he will - as you say - blossom as a player.
  • That's the thing. Even with the news piece being what it was; they had to admit under their "it's not all bad" part, that there are some things he faired better on. So perhaps he's not a QB, but there are other positions. And with Tom Brady, who really would replace him anytime soon? Even if they had brought in Andrew Luck or RGIII (not saying it could have happened, but just for the sake of argument), it's very doubtful even they would have replaced Brady as the QB for the foreseeable future.

But QBs aren't the only positions on these teams. In fact he's in a best case situation career wise, right now. No more Sexy Rexy and his egotistical big mouth; he's where he can get one of the best opportunities available. It's in his hands now, succeed or not; but another position is always a possibility. And yes, if after Belechick gives him all the chances, he can't make it, then yes the fat lady will have sung and it can be stated as such. For now, we don't even know that he's being looked at, for a QB spot... It's not like the coaches came straight out and said "this is what we're doing with him, and these are our plans"...
  • Kinda funny how all of you guys are a bunch of big talkers when not a single one of you has worked hard enought to be on an NFL team. I agree he may not be good as an NFL QB, but line him up as a receiver or running back, and he will do just fine. Continue hiding in your cubicles, and basements in mommy's house you trolls!!
  • Well said!
  • I am shocked that he played badly. Did not see that coming. Wow.
  • please, are we really all that surprised!?!?
  • 12345...Remember when Tebow said he was 'training' heavily and had gained muscle weight.
  • I like your thinking, paco. Maybe his skills just don't fit the NFL scene... or maybe something has gone amiss. Couldn't hurt to take a look.
  • I was at the practice. He was no where as bad as they make it sound. Ryan Mallet, 2 nd string QB, didn't have a very stellar day either. But it wasn't his first day of practice. At least Tebow can say that.
  • And, at least Tebow has character. Mallett can't say that.
  • I feel sort of bad for Tim Tebow, except for the millions of dollars he is earning. Hope he does well with the Pats. Right now we will call Tebow, a "man without a position." I think tight end would be his meat. He is big, strong, fast and can catch a pass. It will all be interesting. Go Dolphins.
  • I see all the know all players are out there if you were any good you might be playing weekend football in the fall.
  • Remember when Tebow said he was 'training' heavily and had gained muscle weight.
  • Are you freaking serious? Tim threw 2...count 'em TWO interceptions the entire practice. That is hardly what I would call "horrendous". It was also the very first practice. For God's sakes, STOP THE INSANITY of hating on Tebow. You should be thanking your lucky stars that your team has him.
  • Tim was not given a chance to try out for the pats QB spot, but because he can play football and is a proven winner. I think he will be used as a decoy, wide receiver or other spots that can give him as chance to make a play now and again. He will always have to be contended with because he can run, and yes even throw. Bill sees something in him that he thinks can help the team and also keep this man in the NFL. He is good for the game
  • Hey! I played 3rd. string QB at the Bears in the 60's and let me tell all of you armchair QB's out there, NOTHING is as it looks! You wuzzz's wouldn't last 2 minutes! you get a 6'8" - 270lb DB grinning at you and you'll s **t your pants and run home to your mommy!LMFAO!!!!!
  • Gee, do we think anyone else might have had a horrendous first day of PRACTICE? Pay no attention to those 4 TD passes against the Steelers in the PLAYOFFS. The media us unhappy that Belichick cut them off at the knees when they wanted to start crap from Day 1. So they're chomping at the bit to start it all over again.
  • Don't you guys get it. Tebow if he makes the team, and that's a big if, will be a running back in the QB spot or TE. I personally think he will be cut before training camp ends.
  • The guy won when he had the chance to play. I know he had a great d behind him when he was in denver, but you gotta give him a chance to play. Love him or hate him you gotta admit he's got something special about him.
  • Tebow is not an NFL QB...he needs to realize this or just give it up. If he has a TE or WR ablility go for it.He plays QB like a college QB that will never work in NFL.
And he needs to stop the religion stuff none stop. If he prays with other players @ end of game no problem.
And he didn't do **** in Denver.
  • Here we go again!! All the so called sports reporters, giving their analyzes of how bad a job Tebow did today. To read some of these post, that people write, about how bad Tebow is. The bottom line is, that not one of these reporters, much less, any of these quarterback analyzing couch potato commenters, could hold Tebow's jock. He has won every year he's played, given the time on the field. The one thing he has, is his ability to play in he NFL, that can't be close to being said from any one who is writing about this article. Apparently the coach seems to think his pros out way his cons. He is on a team that he doesn't need to be a pro bowler. All he has to do, is play with in the system, when his time comes, and he has the supporting cast to handle the rest for him. He is a winner, and leader as well, and that is what the coach likes about him. Hopefully he'll make the cut, play well, and win a few Super Bowls. That is much more than anyone here could ever dream of.

  • he's always going to be horrendous as a quarterback but he might be ok as a receiver or tight end. he's probably just going to be more of a distraction than anything else, just like that other idiot hernandez.
  • Tebow has just had a gift dropped on his lap. There is no way he will make it as a QB, but now that Hernandez is gone, there is no reason why he can't do everything he did and more. He just needs to accept his different role.
  • Anything to **** on Tebow. The writer is a dick.
  • Man. People really hate this guy. Hey Tim! Maybe you should smoke some weed, beat the sh*t our of your girlfriend, kill your buddy while drunk driving or act like a total anti-social d*ckhead.

    Everyone would love you then.
  • Does no one remember Paul Hornung? All-purpose back led Pack to several titles. Tebow same kind of guy.
  • Anyone considered Tebow as a tailback or fullback? He runs like Alstott and doesn't fumble. He may not work so well as a tight end considering the size of the NFL defensive ends. Also, he's not geared toward being a blocker. He's more of a ball mover. I will have to say he did his best work when he ran the ball. Are you listening Coach? GO GATORS!
  • Who gives a big rats butt. The boy plays football because like the rest of them hes too lazy to work
  • Remember the last guy who was too short and not talented enough to be dropped from the Jets to be picked up by NE? Danny Woodhead.

Its the first day of practice people. Give the guy a break.
  • I really like Tebow. He may not be the best for quarterback but he his a hell of a team leader. 2011 Broncos?? 6 game win streak.. that doesnt just happen in the NFL if you dont have the "talent" yall have been talking about.
  • What do I think? I think Tebow has a hell of a lot more class than these #@#%35^ NFL reporters who delight in tearing him down. Practice has just started and already the belittling starts. I can't imagine how these talking heads survived the off season without having Tebow to make their day. They would find something to chastise him on even if his only job for the Patriots was to lead prayer services at the start of each game.
  • Tim Tebow is at best a subpar quarterback. Lets be serious, half the reason he was so good in college is because teams could actually pull off the half back option. The man has talent, and is definitely a football player in some regard. However, I just can't picture him throwing a football for the rest of his career.
  • Typical media!!!
  • Excuse me but HORRENDOUS is murdering your teammates.... not practicing football
  • Its training camp. They are paid to play. Who cares how training camp practice went. Talent is talent; in which some are clearly lacking.

Its not about entertaining the fans at training camp...
  • yes it is the first day, but i still feel he is not an NFL QB. i think he would be great at other positions, though. i hope he doesn't have the Eric crouch syndrome and quick like a baby because he cant play QB.
  • "Horrendous" is a pretty big word for an idiot to use. Well done, Tom Curran.
  • Maybe they meant " HERRNANDOUS "
  • It's funny how many NFL fans, players, coaches and yes, even sports reporters, forget that Tim Tebow won more playoff games as QB of the Denver Broncos than has future hall-of-fame QB, Peyton Manning. I know that it is tough for many to digest, but it's a fact. Say want you want about wounded duck passes, unorthodox throwing motion, too religious, etc., but I have to give the man credit. Tebow has the heart of a warrior, knows how to lead and when given the opportunity, is a proven winner.
  • let him play some preseason games, maybe he'll get into a rhythm. i'm not a pat's or t-bow fan, but u paid for him so give him a better chance then the jet's did.

for all the negative comments against this guy that should be enough to motivate him as well as the money.
  • Tim Tebow should be playing starting half back. See Green Bay in 1960. I doubt Belechik has the intelligence and the historical knowledge to figure this point out. But if he does, thumbs up!
  • Not a football fan.....Tell me is all this hate because this guy believes in "GOD"?....
