Minnesota Vikings quarterback Joe Webb played an absolute stinker of a playoff game on Saturday, which is shocking if you actually believed the absurd hype some of NBC’s analysts tried to feed us about him before the game. NBC was hoping for a good game between the Vikings and Green Bay Packers, but they learned Saturday that starting quarterback Christian Ponder could not play because of an elbow injury, and that Webb would be starting in his place. NBC executives may have panicked and worried that fewer people would be interested in watching Webb, who did not throw a pass the entire regular season, but luckily their analysts assured viewers that the former sixth-round pick was quite capable. Actually, they started hyping Webb like he was in the same quarterback class as Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson, and as if he was a Pro Bowl candidate this season. “No matter who plays quarterback, the goal is always to take pressure off of Adrian Peterson,” Cris Collinsworth said of the Vikings before the game. “If Christian Ponder is the quarterback, you have the threat of the play action passing game. But with Joe Webb, you have the threat of the play action passing game, and you have this read option offense which Green Bay really hasn’t had a chance to prepare for, so it’s going to be a really interesting matchup.” When play-by-play man Al Michaels asked Collinsworth what the change meant for Green Bay, Collinsworth went even further off the Webb deep end. “This is the third time [the Packers have] played the Minnesota Vikings in five weeks, so they come in here thinking, ‘we know everything there is to know about what they’re going to do on offense.’ And then you get this Joe Webb X-factor. There is an uncertainty going into this game now, which is going to make it really, really interesting to watch.” “This is like Saturday night mystery theater,” added Michaels. Saturday night mystery theater, X-factor, really interesting matchup, uncertainty — I mean shoot, the Packers should have really been worried, right? That sort of hype about the game was nothing compared to Tony Dungy, however. In the studio before the game, Dungy called Webb “special,” and said he gave the Vikings more of a chance to win than most people would have thought. He specifically said he liked the Vikings’ chances with Webb. We don’t have a transcription of what he said, but we do have these pregame tweets he offered: Christian Ponder out, Joe Webb will play QB for Vikes tonight. Don’t panic Viking fans. He brings something to the table. — Tony Dungy (@TonyDungy) January 5, 2013 We had Joe Webb’s 1st game on @snfonnbc on a Tues night in Philly. He beat the Eagles that night and played great. We’ll see tonight! — Tony Dungy (@TonyDungy) January 5, 2013 I completely agree with the analysts who thought that the read option would be a good offensive strategy to use against the Packers. The problem is that they failed to recognize that Webb is nowhere near the class of Griffin, Wilson, or Kaepernick, whose names all came up in the discussion about Webb facing Green Bay. There are good reasons why the Vikings have not fared well in games where Webb has seen significant playing time (they’re 1-5 including Saturday). He’s just not that good. We all knew it. I’m not sure why NBC’s analysts tried to bill it as anything else. Webb’s final stats: 11-for-30, 180 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception; 68 rushing yards, 1 fumble lost, and most of his good stats came on the final two drives with the game essentially over. He also provided us with this truly awful play: I don’t have anything against Joe Webb, I just know he’s not very good and I resent educated and respected analysts trying to sell us on something nowhere near reality. The post Tony Dungy, Cris Collinsworth overhyped Joe Webb who was a flop was published on Larry Brown Sports. Related posts: Tony Dungy says Take that *******! Report: Paul Pierce could opt out of contract, join Clippers

While Celtics fans would love to see Paul Pierce finish out his career in Boston, many seem to think that won’t be the case.   There’s reportedly a belief around the NBA that Pierce will opt out of his final season with the Washington Wizards to play for the Los Angeles Clippers, NBA.com’s David Aldridge reported Monday. Report: NBA exploring moving start of Finals up

The NBA’s conference finals have been the definition of anti-climax as both series appear headed towards four-game sweeps. But that’s nowhere near as unexciting as the wait until the start of the NBA Finals will be. The starting date of the Finals was set as June 5 before the end the second round. And had either conference final been even remotely interesting, that would not...

It sounds like Isaiah Thomas will be adding the title of NBA recruiter to his resume this summer. The Boston Celtics plan to be big players in free agency this offseason, and Danny Ainge, the team’s president of basketball operations, is seeking the help of his No. 1 scorer. “Danny said if there’s any free agent out there I’m interested in, to let him know,” Thomas...

Baseball players in the military: A tribute

During the course of a 162-game season, many people take baseball for granted. Game after game, day after day, tend to encourage an attitude of complacency among fans and likely even the players.  This wonderful sport that has been around since the Civil War era is so ingrained in our consciousness that it’s comparable to breathing to many folks. We don’t think about breathing...

'Free Tom Brady' rally draws about 150 Patriots fans

New England Patriots fans will do anything to support their quarterback. For a decent handful, that meant ditching their Memorial Day weekend plans.   About 150 people gathered in a parking lot outside Gillette Stadium on Sunday morning as part of a “Free Tom Brady” rally to protest the quarterback’s suspension for his role in Deflategate. “You can’t win...

LeBron's triple-double leads Cavs to win in OT thriller

Cleveland Cavaliers guard LeBron James may have missed his first 10 shots, including all nine in the first quarter. Kyrie Irving might have been sitting out for the second consecutive game. At the end of the night, it didn’t matter. Riding yet another awe-inspiring overall performance from a hobbled James, Cleveland defeated the Atlanta Hawks 114-111 in overtime to take a 3-0...

Corey Brewer: We got our butt kicked, it was embarrassing
