With a second NFL team essentially giving up on him in light of being cut by the New York Jets earlier this week and no teams coming forward to sign him after clearing waivers, some have suggested that perhaps Tim Tebow pursue a career in another professional football league where he could better hone his quarterbacking skills, namely the Canadian Football League.

As someone who followed a career path that included playing football in leagues other than the NFL, Warren Moon, who played six years in the CFL with the Edmonton Eskimos before moving on to a Hall of Fame career in the NFL, mainly with the Houston Oilers, disagrees with the assertion that Tim Tebow would thrive in the CFL.

Moon believes that Tebow’s biggest problem — and it would be the biggest problem for any quarterback no matter where he played — is that he just is not an accurate nor a particularly skilled passer, and that deficiency would prove to be monumental in the pass-happy Canadian Football League.

And while the Montreal Alouettes retain Tebow’s CFL rights, that doesn’t mean Moon believes the quarterback simply could step in and succeed.

Speaking on CBS Houston’s “MaD Radio” program, Moon suggested that the very same issues that have caused Tebow trouble in the NFL will damage any foray into the CFL as well.

“You have to be able to throw the ball up there if anything and they throw the ball a lot.  There are only three downs so the passing game is much more important up there and there’s a lot more field to cover so if you can’t throw the football, it doesn’t matter where you play quarterback,” said Moon. “You have got to be able to throw it and I think that’s his biggest problem, just being to complete passes, be an accurate passer.  I think he’s a really good athlete playing the position but I don’t think that’s enough sometimes.”

Moon adds that Tebow, unlike he and another quarterback who had success in the CFL before moving on to the NFL, Doug Flutie, does not possess the requisite skill set necessary to compete in any high-profile football league. Moon argues that he and Flutie had the skills to compete and succeed in the NFL, just not the opportunity.

“We (Moon and Flutie) knew how to throw the ball. We were very good passers. That had nothing to do with it.  We didn’t have to go up there and try and change our throwing motion.  We didn’t have to go up there and try and become more accurate.  We just needed to get the opportunity,” said Moon. “Doug’s was because of height and mine was because of my color and so we went up there and proved ourselves but I think Tim has been given a lot of opportunities to play the position.”

Despite his lukewarm view of Tebow’s chance of success, Moon doesn’t rule out the possibility that the extremely talented athlete may make his mark someday in pro football. Probably just not at the quarterback position.

“He’s worked as hard as anybody can but there just hasn’t been that much improvement made in his quarterback fundamentals and his technique so he might think about maybe playing another position if he wants to stay in the NFL,” said Moon.

Definitely not a ringing endorsement from a man who with an enormous wealth of experience who knows more than his fair share about what it takes to succeed and compete at the quarterback position, no matter the league.

  • As a Bill's fan, I spent many a day watching the team in camp when they were in Fredonia. Warren; really, Flutie had an arm? As much as I like Flutie and thought there was no question he should be the Bill's starter; he had no arm. He was a wind up passer, who put his whole body into the throw...looked like Tim Lincecum pitching. His ball had average at best, velocity, but it was accurate. Moon just trying to muster support to keep Tebow down.
  • What are these criticisms based on? Mr. Tebow was the fall guy of a stupid publicity stunt by the Jets. Has Mr. Moon been in Jets camp or practice, or simply basing his opinion on the observations of an irrational, senseless offensive system that Mr. Tebow was placed in by an ex- offensive coordinator.
    I believe Mr. Tebow will be successful by virtue of intangibles. The man is a proven winner. You cannot achieve all he has simply by accident! There are such factors as charisma, drive, and, in my opinion- when he's on the field, his team seems to function at a higher, more motivated level. He will succeed, and I for one, can't wait 'til he proves all the pile on critics wrong...
