This is an ESPN insider piece, but it basically makes the case I've been making for two months now. It's all about Peyton.

Highlights include:

The best quarterback switch a team has made after a disaster season is the 2007 Miami Dolphins, who inserted Chad Pennington and went from one win to 11. Think about that: Pennington has been the best upgrade for a league-worst team in the following year for 15 years. With Manning back next year, the Colts would be going from the worst quarterbacking in the league to something close to the best. The win improvement will be dramatic.

and

In reality, drafting high on occasion has no correlation with sustained success. Ask Detroit or Cincinnati. You don't win because you draft high. You win because you get good quarterbacking and draft well enough.

Moreover, the idea of "blowing up" a roster is laughable in the NFL. Teams turn over an average of about 20 percent of their rosters each year, and injuries just exacerbate that. Ask the Green Bay Packers, who won the last Super Bowl with 14 players on injured reserve. The team with the most turnover in the last two years is Seattle, who started 2011 with just six players from their Week 1 roster from 2008. But the turnover has meant little because the quarterbacking has been so poor. Real roster turnover usually starts with turning over the quarterback.
