We all remember watching the videos and seeing the photos.
Drew Bledsoe, the newest member of the Buffalo Bills, runs onto the field holding the new Bills helmet while wearing the new home uniform. Tom Donahoe wanted to usher in a new era for the Bills, complete with a new QB, new uniform, and aspirations towards making Buffalo a contender again.
Eight years later, we're well past Donahoe's era of futility, three head coaches have been fired, and the Bills are an entire decade removed from playoff contention.
Not only are the current uniforms eyesores (especially the TERRIBLE away jerseys), they symbolize a very dark era for Bills fans. When we see the navy blue shoulder plate on the white away jerseys, we are forced to think back to visions of Kelly Holcomb getting sacked in New England or J.P. Losman throwing darts to awaiting linebackers in Jacksonville. It's enough to make your skin crawl.
The best development out of One Bills Drive in the past five years has been the inclusion of the retro uniforms from the mid '60's. Bills fans have wholeheartedly embraced the sharp royal blue uniforms with the white helmets and striped socks. Last year the Bills pushed the envelope even further by introducing the away version of the retro look, which is a very streamlined and visually pleasing white on white design. Fans raved about this look.
The Bills organization would be well served to scan the Bills message boards and listen to fan outcry in regards to the uniform situation. Fans want to see one of three scenarios develop:
1. Convert to the '60's throwback uniforms full time.
2. Bring back the '90's uniforms, which most Bills fans are still in love with.
3. Invent a new look that harnesses the two aforementioned uniforms.
In the NFL, teams seldom hold on to a player or coach that just doesn't perform. It doesn't matter how long or how brief the person has been with the team - make it happen or go home. The 2002-2009 Buffalo Bills uniforms have not performed, in much the same way the teams did not. These unis are blatant eyesores that represent a failed attempt to embrace a modern design. What we were left with was an Arena Football uniform worn by a CFL quality team.
Buddy Nix and Chan Gailey are embracing an old school approach. They want to get the Bills back to the glory days. A great start would be to scrap the navy blue mistake made by Tom Donahoe and get back to some Red, White, and Royal. It's what the fans want.
