New Browns WR Jerry Jeudy responds to viral Steve Smith comments

New Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jerry Jeudy spoke with reporters via a Zoom conference call on Thursday and addressed comments retired wideout and current NFL Network personality Steve Smith previously made about Jeudy when the 24-year-old was featuring for the Denver Broncos.

"I always say the eye in the sky don't lie," Jeudy said, as shared by Spencer German of Fan Nation's Browns Digest and Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland/The Land on Demand. "Put on the tape, put on the film. Some games I didn't have my best game but I'm gonna control what I can control. If you turn on the tape, turn on the film, you really can see what I'm capable of doing, even though the stats [are] not really showing what it's saying. Like I said, you turn on the tape, turn on the film, you'll see something totally different."

The matter began this past fall when Smith referred to Jeudy, then of the Broncos, as "just a guy" and "an average wide receiver" during a podcast episode. Smith later approached Jeudy to apologize prior to a game but received a cold response, and Smith then blasted Jeudy during an on-air segment.

"When teams call me asking if they should trade for you, I would say no, don't trade for Jerry Jeudy," Smith said at that time. "Because he is mentally unable to handle constructive criticism — he can be a wide receiver, he's a tier three."

Smith eventually walked back those words and offered a public apology. He left little doubt on Thursday that he no longer wants to discuss the issue with Cleveland media members or, seemingly, anybody else:

The Browns agreed to send a 2024 fifth-round draft pick and a 2024 sixth-round selection to the Broncos in exchange for Jeudy ahead of the new league year that opened on Wednesday.

"They didn't let one person stop them from knowing the true me," Jeudy added about Smith's original comments. "They understand the game of football. You know, some people got their opinions on me and some people think otherwise. It didn't affect me in no type of way, it didn't affect the Browns. I know the Browns didn't really listen to what Steve Smith had to say, they just turned on the tape to see if it's really true or not. And they turn on the tape and see it wasn't true, what he said."

Assuming Smith serves as an NFL Network analyst through at least this coming fall, he and Jeudy will likely run into each other at some point next season. That interaction could make for yet another viral moment involving "Agent 89" and the 2020 first-round draft pick who has received a chance to jumpstart his career with Cleveland.
