The New England Patriots decided to invite Darren Sharper to Patriots training camp. New England already has some quality safeties with strong safety Patrick Chung and free safety Brandon Meriweather. James Sanders is New England’s backup free safety.
The odds are heavily stacked against Darren Sharper to end up on the New England Patriots final roster as a starter. At this point you cannot rule out Sharper as a backup strong safety to Patrick Chung because Sharper would provide the New England Patriots a veteran presence on strong safety. Heck Sharper may not even get signed if New England does not like what they see so its too early to say that Belicheck is going to open up a roster spot for Darren Sharper.
This may be Chung’s year to break out even if Chung emerges Sharper provides a veteran presence that the Patriots have lacked since Rodney Harrison was on the the team.
