The Saints have decided to not extend the 2015 option on Mark Ingram’s contract, indicating once again that the position of running back in the NFL is a rotating door.
Facing a similar decision last week with Cam Jordan, the Saints extended Jordan through 2015 – which will be worth a base salary of $6.97 million.
Late last year Ingram showed flashes of the Heisman-winning running back he once was, but his overall career has been one of underachievement (considering he – along with Jordan – was a 1st round pick in 2011).
This decision doesn’t necessarily mean Ingram’s tenure in New Orleans is over after this year; in fact, this may just be an incentive tactic used to coax the best out of him. However, If he doesn’t manage to continue his improved play they’ll likely stand by their decision and show him the door next offseason.
