The New Orleans Saints have had their nicks and bruises at the wide receiver position since the start of camp. Marques Colston has not been practicing due to a foot injury, which doesn’t appear that serious. In addition Joseph Morgan has sustained an undisclosed injury in the black and gold scrimmage. These injuries have all of a sudden made the Saints very thin at receiver, prompting the signing of Steve Breaston. The Michigan product is going into his seventh season and brings a veteran presence and added depth to the receiver position. Breaston, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs, has some experience starting and has had a modest amount of production posting over 700 yards 4 of his last five seasons, including one 1000 yard season in 2008. However, recently he has been hampered by a knee injury. His effectiveness in competition will be contingent upon whether he can stay healthy. It seems that the Saints believe his knee is good enough for him to be on the roster.  Assuming his knee checks out, he will come in immediately and compete with Nick Toon and Kenny Stills for a spot in the rotation while Colston continues to nurse his foot injury. Even if Breaston doesn’t make it to the field, his presence might be helpful to a guy like Stills. Stills and Breaston have similar builds with Breaston being 6’0” 189 pounds. He might be able to serve as a mentor to Stills on how to use his quickness and his diminutive build to his advantage. The Saints have also been in talks with former Jacksonville Jaguar Laurant Robinson for some more depth to an already banged up receiving corps.
