New Orleans Saints' Willie Gay Jr. taking Marcus Maye's number six after recent release from team

The New Orleans Saints have made some intriguing additions over the past week during NFL free agency. One of the biggest was linebacker Willie Gay Jr., former of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Gay Jr. is taking former Saints safety Marcus Maye's number (6) next season.

Maye was released prior to the start of free agency. He played in seventeen games over the past two years with the Saints. He dealt with multiple injuries.

Gay will be an important depth piece for the team's defense. Linebacker needed talent behind Demario Davis and Pete Werner.

New Orleans still needs to add another proven safety to fill the void of Maye, though. Keep an eye on veterans free agents, and the Saints could draft one on day two or three of the 2024 NFL Draft, too.

The decision from Gay comes as a bit of a surprise as he wore number fifty while he played for the Kansas City Chiefs over the past handful of seasons.
