NY Giants Central:
The New York Giants could have a problem on their hands if they don’t offer Barry Cofield a long term contract or a more pricier one-year deal. He played the 2010 season on a one-year tender and doesn’t plan on doing that again. “I don’t know if I could be happy coming to work knowing that I should have been a free agent twice,” Cofield said.
If a new CBA is not done it could potentially hurt the Giants chances of retaining Cofield, since he would have to honor the old labor agreement. Under the old deal, players had to be in the league six years(after a two year extension implemented to the old deal) before entering the free agent market unrestricted.
So, Cofield would have to either play under a contract tender this year or take more drastic steps. He is prepared to either hold out or demand a trade.
“I love the Giants,” he said, “but if I have to move on, that’s the business of it.” Hopefully it doesn’t come to that.
