With a sea of depth at the linebacker position, very little is set in stone for the New York Giants. Earlier in the offseason, General Manager Jerry Reese hinted at the possibility of Michael Boley shifting to middle linebacker, but the team has since acquired Keith Rivers and re-signed Chase Blackburn, whom defensive coordinator Perry Fewell says has an inside track to earn the starting job. Now it's all about competition to see who will fill what role, and Boley said on Wednesday that he still sees himself as the man on the outside.

"I'm still the outside linebacker," Boley said. "But as things go, you never know. Once camp gets going, you never know what coach has planned. So right now, I'm just happy to have a job."

What the Giants have planned for training camp remains to be seen, but so far this offseason their depth at middle linebacker has started with Chase Blackburn, continued with Mark Herzlich and ended with Greg Jones. However, some consideration has been given to having Rivers receive some snaps at MLB during camp; a position he's not completely unfamiliar with.

"He came in and he's done some tremendous work," Boley said of Rivers. "He's picked up things pretty well."

For Big Blue and head coach Tom Coughlin, this is precisely the problem you'd want to have heading into camp. A plethora of talent and only so many spots available. Barring any injuries, it's a win/win scenario for the team, although it's unfortunate that a few players will have to be bumped when the dust finally settles.
