The New York Giants were hoping to have defensive tackle Chris Canty back for the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys, but that’s not going to happen. The team has placed both he and tight end Travis Beckum on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, meaning they will each miss at least the first six weeks of the season. Neither will be eligible to come off of PUP until October 16th. To clarify PUP rules (from Giants.com): According to NFL rules, the earliest Canty and Beckum can be activated is the day after the sixth regular season weekend (October 16). From October 16 up until the day after the ninth regular season weekend (November 6), players on reserve/PUP may begin a 21-day practice period before a decision has to be made whether to activate, terminate, or keep them on the reserve/PUP list.
