With Darrelle Revis being shipped off to Tampa Bay, a new leader has emerged in the New York Jets secondary: cornerback Antonio Cromartie. You may remember Cromartie from his stint on the HBO series ‘Hard Knocks’ in 2010, where he was struggling to name all nine of his children. However, Cromartie has grown into a mentor for the young defensive backs in the secondary this offseason. Cromartie was also said to look the best he has in years in OTA’s last week by the coaching staff. Cromartie last year was bashing teammates and begging to play offense, mocking the wide receivers on the roster. Instead, this offseason Cromartie has invited Kyle Wilson, Stephen Hill, Josh Bush and Aaron Berry to his camp in California to help mentor them. The 5 players will miss Mark Sanchez’s ‘Jets West’ practice’s with the rest of the team. The Jets are very pleased to see Cromartie growing as a teammate and trying to help the players around him improve. The Jets believe that even with the loss of Revis, Cromartie can be the new leader in the secondary and improve on his 3 interceptions from last season. Other Notes: The New York Jets signed tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. last week to a one-year deal. Winslow impressed Rex Ryan in his tryout last week and scored a spot on the roster. Winslow will try to help fill a void at tight end and compete for the starting job with Jeff Cumberland. The Jets will pay Tim Tebow more money this year than the Patriots will over the course of his two-year contract. Thank you Mike Tannenbaum. Geno Smith said he will attend Mark Sanchez’s ‘Jets West’ practice if Sanchez invites him. Smith refused to comment last week when asked if he would attend the event by the media. He then told reporters he didn’t know what it was and was instructed to not comment on things he was unsure of.
