The New York Jets are not ready to rule out Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis for the season. The team will not immediately place him on season-ending injured reserve just in case he recovers in time to play in the playoffs. That’s being a bit optimistic but I guess you have to give Gang Green credit for keeping hope alive.

On Friday Jets head coach Rex Ryan claimed that there is a “0.0002 percent chance” that Revis could come back and play. The 27-year-old four-time Pro Bowler tore the ACL in his left knee last Sunday during a 23-20 overtime win against the Miami Dolphins.

Revis is expected to have surgery on his knee sometime in the next few weeks, and the team will wait until after the surgery to make a decision regarding his place on the roster or injured reserve.

The problem with keeping Revis on the roster is the fact that he will eat up one of the 53 spots available. These days with the way injuries can pile up, it is incredibly important for teams to have “usable depth” available. Revis’ spot would essentially be useless for at least the rest of the regular season.

Besides, even when Revis can step on a field again, he won’t be near 100 percent. You don’t just bounce right back from an ACL tear. He would need weeks of working his way back.

The Jets certainly don’t have to put Revis on IR right now, but over the next few week I expect them to do so. There is no way he would be able to return in time to help them this season.
