The New York Jets defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 37-13 Saturday night, in the Jets second preseason game. Quarterback Mark Sanchez made his second consecutive start while Geno Smith sat out of the game due to an ankle injury. Mark Sanchez’s up and down play has left the door open for Geno Smith to win the starting job. Much like the first preseason game against the Detroit Lions, Mark Sanchez had an up and down game. Sanchez threw for 169 yards and was 13 for 23 with a touchdown and an interception. He led the Jets to a touchdown and a field goal on his first two drives. However, Sanchez’s biggest struggles came in the red zone. On a third and goal, Sanchez was intercepted by Marcus Trufant in the end zone. At the end of the second quarter, on a third and goal Sanchez dragged out a play that ended up getting thrown out of the end zone as the half expired instead of throwing the ball away quicker to get a field goal. With Geno Smith not playing, Sanchez will most likely be the starter for the next preseason game against the New York Giants. Smith has four days to prove he should get a chance to start. For Sanchez, the key to winning the job is to play more consistent. Sanchez has showed progress so far this preseason but one or two times a game, he makes a mistake that can cause the Jets to lose games. Chris Ivory made his New York Jets debut, carrying the ball six times for just 13 yards. Ivory is expected to be the featured back and will have to stay healthy to hold on to his starting spot. Bilal Powell had another impressive night rushing for 68 yards on seven carries. The Jets first round pick last year, linebacker Quinton Coples suffered a hairline fracture in his foot and will most likely miss 3-4 weeks. Coples is expected to play a big role on defense this year for the Jets but will now most likely miss the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
