New York Jets safety Eric Smith left last night's preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals with an apparent knee injury. Eric Smith appears to have sustained an MCL sprain, as reported by Jenny Vrentas of the Star-Ledger. The Jets bolstered their safety position over the offseason with LaRon Landry and Yeremiah Bell, plus 2012 NFL Draft picks Josh Bush and Antonio Allen, but Eric Smith is still a vital part of the defense. Eric Smith is expected to miss the rest of the preseason.
With Eric Smith likely out for the rest of the New York Jets preseason schedule, expect Antonio Allen and Josh Bush to see more reps with the first team. The Jets are trying to manage LaRon Landry as he returns from his Achilles injury and will need to give him rest so that he can be on schedule for the start of the regular season. The Jets are targeting the start of the regular season with Eric Smith's recovery as well.
Eric Smith has been tasked with getting LaRon Landry and Yeremiah Bell up to speed. He is the communicator on the back end of the defense as well as an essential piece of the Jets special teams units. Eric Smith is known as a Mike Westhoff favorite for his intelligence and toughness.
Eric Smith took a lot of heat for his issues in coverage last season. It was later revealed that he played a good chunk of the season with a torn meniscus, plus the fact that the lack of a pass rush up front led to the secondary being exposed so often. The Jets are hoping Eric Smith will be ready to go week one versus the Buffalo Bills at MetLife Stadium.

There are two problems with Chad Johnson signing with a new NFL team
The first one is because he was cut so early in Dolphins camp, we don’t really know what his skill set is right now. Was last season with the Patriots a fluke or has he just lost it?
The second problem is that the team that brings him in, has to have a coach as flamboyant as he is. That eliminates a lot...
Curious about how the Jets are planning to use Tim Tebow in their new offense? Well, too bad. The Jets aren't telling -- and they're not letting anyone else spoil the surprise, either. New York practiced its Tebow-led Wildcat offense on Monday, although the team is doing its best to keep that a secret. So much so, they aren't allowing the media to report on the goings...
CINCINNATI - Tim Tebow's New York Jets preseason debut showed us that The Most Popular Backup Quarterback Ever can run when he needs to and isn't afraid to take a hit or try to stick a pass into traffic.
Nothing's changed there. And nothing's changed with the Jets' plans, either. Rex Ryan has been adamant that Mark Sanchez is his starter and Tebow is his backup...
Of all the rhetoric, hoopla and nauseating coverage over the arrival of quarterback Tim Tebow, the one thing that I rarely hear discussed is what happens if starting Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez gets hurt?
The Jets' offense looked putrid in their preseason loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, 17-6.
Yes, we know a legitimate workhorse running back has yet to show his face. Yes...
New York Jets TE Dustin Keller told New York Daily News “I definitely feel that I’m a Pro Bowl tight end,”... “And I feel that will happen this year.”
Don't get us wrong, we like Dustin Keller. He's a good tight end, but he's not a Pro Bowl tight end. He doesn't rank anywhere close to the likes of Rob Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham, Aaron Hernandez or even...
The New York Jets waived punter Travis Baltz, the team announced Sunday. Baltz played collegiately at Maryland before signing as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts in 2011. He signed with the Jets in January after getting cut by the Colts.
NFL Preseason games ultimately mean next to nothing in the long run, the results forgotten soon after the final whistle. Individual performances are the main takeaway, as game situations can expose faults as well as strengths in an individual player's skill set. Preseason games are a good way to test how a unit is progressing, especially in weeks two and three on the preseason...
The New York Giants have lost interest in the New York Jets, and some don't even see Rex Ryan and his circus as their biggest rival.
The teams in the NFC East are the Giants' biggest concern these days, and some members of the Super Bowl champions could care less about bragging rights when the teams meet in their annual preseason game at MetLife Stadium on Saturday.
The Jets are banking on their 2012 rookie draft class to make a major splash this upcoming season. Find out how New York's top two draft picks fared in their first preseason game.
As preseason games go, we can always find something to construct a plotline. In fact, preseason coverage has an eerily similar feel as Olympic coverage – half of the coverage is spent explaining the background and storyline of an athlete that most have never followed.
A short-lived career for one moment of glory, such are the bottom-roster churning NFL preseason games and the...
