Found October 12, 2011 on Turn On The Jets:

The most obvious beneficiary of the decision to trade Derrick Mason is rookie receiver Jeremy Kerley. In his first extended action last week, Kerley finished with 3 receptions for 35 yards and a touchdown, making more of an impact than Mason already had all season which accelerated the decision to trade him.

Kerley was probably the most hyped Jets player throughout training camp as he repeatedly made big plays in every practice. He had a somewhat quiet pre-season and didn’t do much until the Raiders game when he ripped off a big punt return. Last week was the first time he really had a chance at receiver and he showed the big play ability the coaching staff was raving about all summer.

The decision to move Mason is a smart one in that it will give Kerley the chance to grow into the slot receiver role that he appears ready to take over. He has the short area quickness required for the position but also has the speed that Mason lacked to push up the seam. The more Kerley is involved in the regular offensive packages, the more the Jets will likely expand his use in the Wildcat, which will help diversify their attack.

Kerley doesn’t have the pressure of becoming one of the unit’s top options with Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress also at receiver. Yet, he should be a complimentary weapon who gradually takes on a bigger role. Hopefully the coaching staff will also begin to expand the role of running back Joe McKnight by incorporating him in the screen game and giving him more outside handoffs, which coupled with Kerley’s greater use will provide a needed shot of speed to the offense.

The Rundown: The Offense Gets a New ‘Do

With Derrick Mason traded, it can be easy in retrospect to just whitewash what happened and blithely say that this will make the team better in the long run — thereby assuaging any concerns we have about just how the Jets offense is currently struggling. Yesterday I made clear my reasons why the moved bothered me, but in trying to present the other side of the coin.  The truth...

Burress doesn’t buy Mason explanation

Two months ago, the Jets talked about Derrick Mason catching 100 passes and being like a third starting wide receiver. Yesterday, they tried to explain why they dumped him eight weeks later, trading the wide receiver to the Texans on Tuesday. But the spin coming from the Jets did not...

Jets to deal WR Mason to Texans for pick (AP)

A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that the New York Jets have agreed to trade wide receiver Derrick Mason to the Houston Texans for an undisclosed draft pick. Tuesday night's move comes just five games into Mason's stint with the Jets after he signed with them and reunited with Rex Ryan in early August.

Jets Trade Derrick Mason to the Texans

Wide receiver Derrick Mason never made much of an impact this season with the New York Jets. It was reported that this past weekend Mason was benched because he ended up complaining to Jets head coach Rex Ryan about not getting enough passes thrown his way. Now according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, [...]

Jets not worried about Bills

The Jets dropped their third game of the season to the Patriots in New England Sunday to fall to 2-3 on the season. While looking up at the Patriots in the division might be something they’re used to, looking up at the Bills at 4-1 is something new for them. When asked by Yahoo Sports about how unusual it is to be looking up at two teams ahead of them in the division, veteran receiver...

Bondy: Jets' party is pooped

The Jets keep looking dumber and dumber on this Derrick Mason deal, denying the existence or impact of events that surely influence their decision-making process. Rex Ryan, as much as he hates to admit it, turns out to be like most other pro football coaches when the temperature flares. He has his limits.

Jets deny criticism of coach's system

Despite a published report that suggested otherwise, the New York Jets insist they are a team in complete harmony.
