Dear New York Jets,
Please excuse Mark from football practice until you can provide pass protection for him so that he may live to see his 26th birthday.
Signed,
Sanchez’ mother
To say that the Jets’ offensive line has played horribly would be an understatement. Abysmal seems appropriate as they have given up 12 sacks in two preseason games. RT Wayne Hunter has been benched. His replacement is an undrafted former Hy Vee grocery store clerk, Austin Howard, who gets only his 5th NFL start Sunday against the Panthers. He is 6′ 7′ and 330 lbs. And is reported to be a good run blocker but his lateral quickness has been questioned. Hopefully, Howard makes the most of this opportunity to showcase his talents and performs better than his predecessor.
Much of the blame for the struggle of the Jets quarterbacks is the offensive line. How can a quarterback establish poise and confidence in the pocket when he is eating turf every other snap or running for his life? However, it must be stated that Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow are guilty of hanging on to the football excessively. They both need to be quicker in their decision-making, reading defenses, progressing through their passing options, and utilize their check downs. So before one weighs the merits of either quarterback, and whom should start, the Jets need to solve their problem of deficient pass protection. Austin Howard has a perfect opportunity to step up and make a difference on the O-line. Perhaps then the Jets can find their way to the end zone for the first time all preseason this Sunday. And also, Mrs. Sanchez may sleep better at night.
