The New York Jets have released outside linebacker Bryan Thomas today, ending his run with the team that drafted him. Bryan Thomas is in his 11th season in the NFL, all with the Jets. Bryan Thomas had been dealing with a hamstring injury and was doubtful for Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins. Manish Mehta first reported the move. The Jets have signed Donnie Fletcher to the active roster from the practice squad in his place.

The move by the New York Jets to release Bryan Thomas comes as a surprise. Bryan Thomas was likely to sit out this weekend's game with a hamstring injury, but his outright release was unexpected. Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that Bryan Thomas might be brought back

It's unclear what the motivation behind the move was, but the recent play of Garrett McIntyre may have had some influence on the Jets' decision. Garrett McIntyre recorded two sacks and seven combined tackles against the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. The Jets have invested some time in Garrett McIntyre, and as he seems to be coming into his own they have cleared a path for more playing time by cutting ties with Bryan Thomas.

The Jets now have Garrett McIntyre, Calvin Pace and Aaron Maybin at outside linebacker. Along with the move to release Bryan Thomas, the Jets have signed cornerback Donnie Fletcher to the active roster from the practice squad. Donnie Fletcher was an undrafted free agent this year out of Boston College.
