Santonio Holmes, who missed most of last season with a foot injury, still is uncertain when he will be able to return to the field. Holmes in an interview earlier this week declared himself day-to-day. Holmes said he does not want to put himself in a position to re-injure his foot, and will be very cautious upon his return. The Jets open training camp July 25 and will be without their best offensive threat. Geno Smith has yet to throw a pass to Holmes and it could effect the timing between the two if Smith is named the starter. Holmes has done little football activity yet in his rehab. This is very concerning news for the Jets. It won’t be surprising if Holmes is not ready for week one. If Holmes is unable to start week one, the Jets will rely heavily on a wide receiving core that lacks a go-to-guy and a serious down field The New York Jets hope they can get Santonio Holmes’ big play ability back before week one. threat. Don’t be surprised if the Jets look to pick up another veteran receiver during training camp to ease the stress on their two quarterbacks. Receivers like Braylon Edwards, Brandon Lloyd, Steve Breaston and Deion Branch remain free agents. If Holmes is going to miss significant time, the Jets should consider signing one of these veterans. Other Notes: With rookies reporting to camp tomorrow for the Jets, rookies Dee Milliner, Sheldon Richardson and Geno Smith remain unsigned. The Jets would like to have all three of them in camp on Monday and are working hard to get deals done. Milliner and Richardson should be signed by Monday but Geno Smith’s contract is very different then the other two. Smith is being investigated by the NFL Players Association because of his signing with Jay-Z. Jay-Z and Roc Nation is not yet certified by the NFLPA however, expect Smith in camp by July 25 when the rest of the team reports.
