The New York Jets super-fan known as “Fireman Ed” has long been a big presence at the team’s games wearing an infamous No. 42 jersey and a fire helmet with Jets logos on it. Well, now he’s changing his allegiance in order to support his team’s quarterback.

Fireman Ed (whose real name is Edwin M. Anzalone) decided to switch to a No. 6 jersey in a show of solidarity with quarterback Mark Sanchez. The No. 42 jersey was an homage to former Jets running back Bruce Harper.

The 52-year-old retired New York City Firefighter was included in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the Hall of Fans in 1999. Anzalone has been the Jets’ official mascot for years, firing up home crowds with his “J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets” chants. His passion and enthusiasm are infectious.

Before Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills, Anzalone tweeted out the following as a preview of the jersey change:

“If there is or was any question on my support of #6 Mark Sanchez, there won’t b after tomorrow! #42 is in my heart and NOW so is #6 #truth”

Yes, this is a bit of a silly news item to discuss, but Anzalone is probably the NFL’s most visible fan, outside of Skeletor of course. The change in jersey is interesting, especially because of the potential quarterback controversy between Sanchez and Tim Tebow.
