Dalbin Osorio continues our series of breaking down the New York Jets undrafted free agents, with a look at Keith Stroud from Bethune Cookman. Make sure to give Dalbin a follow on Twitter. Name: Keith “KJ” Stroud, Junior. College: Bethune Cookman Position: Wide Receiver Size: 6’3″, 205 pounds 40 Time: 4.51 Vertical: 38 1/2 College Career – Recruited out of Brooklyn, NY KJ Stroud played for Greg Schiano’s Rutgers Scarlet Knights for his Freshman and Sophomore years before transferring to Bethune Cookman. While at Rutgers, Stroud played sparingly and finished with 18 catches for 169 yards in thirteen games. He transferred to Bethune Cookman for his junior and senior seasons and put up modest numbers there as well, posting 33 catches for 423 yards and two touchdowns. Scouting Report – Despite his modest collegiate numbers, Stroud began to turn heads during pro days and combines leading up to the draft. Scouts from his pro day liked that Stroud was good at getting separation from defensive backs and his ability to catch the ball consistently despite his limited reps in college. Scouts loved his prototypical size as a possession WR, as well as his leaping ability. However, other scouts began to call him “the other Rutgers transfer” when distinguishing him and fellow Bethune Cookman WR Eddie Poole, who other scouts said was better prepared for the NFL. Stroud was criticized for not being very explosive downfield and for not being able to use his body to set up bigger throwing lanes for his QB. Where He Fits – Stroud, due to lack of collegiate reps, is not as complete a WR as Zach Rogers, Ryan Spadola, or Marcus Davis, three UDFAs that he is currently competing with for a spot on the Jets 53 man roster. The Jets already have a big target in Stephen Hill who IS explosive downfield and who is guilty of using his body excessively to catch passes, things that Stroud cannot do consistently at this point. There are much better options available for the Jets among their UDFAs at the WR position, and the Jets need one or two of the UDFAs to flash enough that they make the roster over the likes of Clyde “I’m Not Really a Wide Receiver” Gates. Stroud, in my opinion, won’t be one of those guys and he won’t make the 53 man roster. Highlights So, I couldn’t find any highlights from KJ at Bethune Cookman, so i’ve included a video that shows his reaction upon finding out that he is now a New York Jet. Enjoy!
