New York Giants – 20, San Francisco 49ers – 17 Like the Ravens-Patriots game, this was a hard-fought back and forth contest that came down to the last minute, and in fact went into overtime and still wasn’t decided until the OT period was more than half over. While not a lot of people believed in the 49ers, this loss in no way validates the doubters, as the 49ers played this game tougher than most would, going blow for blow with one of the better clutch QBs in the league today. At the head of the effort was Alex Smith (238 total yards, 2 TDs), who threw just enough passes to keep the Giants honest and to keep the potent Giants offense off the field as much as possible. Smith only completed 12 passes though, as he just couldn’t string together enough completions to inevitably get the job done. Even though they didn’t make it to the big game this year, Smith seems to have found the perfect offensive match for his playing style, and looks to have a ...

Smith on verge of converting critics

Alex Smith has come full circle. There may be those Joe Montana followers in San Francisco who remain non-believers, but to his coaches and 49ers teammates, he is a winner -- the quarterback they want for the future. And guess what? Management is going to have to pay for that right after signing him for the bargain-basement price of $4 million this season with a $1 million playoff...

QB Alex Smith Wants To Re-Sign With 49ers For 2012 Season

It is unlikely that 49ers quarterback Alex Smith will test the market when he becomes a free agent March 13 according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. On Monday, Smith did nothing to dispel the belief that he'll back for an eighth season in San Francisco, and his second with coach Jim Harbaugh. "At this point I love it here," Smith said. "Love what...

Giants' secondary has it all covered

They tracked the 49ers wideouts from sideline to sideline, stepping in front of passes and eliminating angles for quarterback Alex Smith.

49ers wideouts were missing in action against Giants

SAN FRANCISCO – Alex Smith reared back and launched a deep throw toward 49ers wide receiver Kyle Williams. It was early in the second quarter, the score tied 7-7, and Williams was streaking up the middle of the field with a step, or three, on the nearest New York Giants defensive back.

The 49ers’ search for a No. 1 WR–and possible Super Bowl-maker–begins

* Straight from tomorrow morning’s paper, with a topper… -To the receiver talk soon enough, but one thought: Unless something screwy happens in the negotiations (in late-Feb or March), Alex Smith will re-sign with the 49ers and be their starting QB next season. Obviously, something... Continue reading...

49ers Can't Handle Giants at Candlestick

The 49ers couldn't handle the Giants in their own backyard of Candlestick Park, as the NFC West juggernaut lost 20-17 in overtime. Return man Kyle Williams had two costly fumbles that led to San Francisco's demise. Fantasy Spin: Quarterback Alex Smith completed 12 of 26 passes for 196 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions. The Giants defense did a good job neutralizing...

49ers KO'd; Brian Jennings to Pro Bowl

After a heartbreaking 20-17 overtime loss by the 49ers in the NFC Championship game to the Giants on a day where Alex Smith reverted back to his usual, relatively ineffective self and Kyle Williams fumbled the game away on two different occasions, as a "need player" by the Packers...

Saints Nation: Super Bowl Pins Giants vs. Patriots

Hard to believe, but a team that the Saints beat by almost 30 points in the Superdome barely over a month ago that finished 9-7 will end up in playing for a chance to win it all. The Giants beat the 49ers, and I have to say I'm relieved by that. The idea of a quarterback as poor as Alex Smith winning a Super Bowl just makes me sick. Yes, I'm still bitter about the Saints...
