ATLANTA Two summers ago when the Falcons essentially went the draft-day equivalent of all-in by trading five picks to take wide receiver Julio Jones, there were mixed emotions about the selection.
The Falcons bet the farm to take the Alabama standout two first-round, one second-round and two more fourth-round picks over the span of two drafts on the premise that he would, indeed, live up to his all-world potential. Sunday's NFC Championship Game in the Georgia Dome served as one of the many justifications in 2012, as Jones once again decimated an opposing secondary, albeit in a losing effort to the San Francisco 49ers.
Though his Falcons fell to the NFC's No. 2 seed 28-24 after taking an early 17-0 lead, Jones set his name in stone on one of football's biggest stages. He finished with 11 catches for 182 yards and two touchdowns. His yardage ranks 15th-most in an NFL playoff game since 1960, and his 11 receptions tied him for 11th with guys like Jerry Rice (1996) and...
BEST OF MAXIM
When Julio Jones was not busy torching the 49ers defense in the 1st Quarter of the NFC Championship game he took some time to knock out a security guard.
Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones accidentally took out a security guard during the first quarter of Sunday's NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Jones was heading towards the sideline to catch a deep pass from quarterback Matt Ryan. Jones was unable to make the catch in bounds, and then he took out the security guard's legs from behind, causing...
As previously noted here on Outside the Boxscore, if you happen to be a security guard on the sidelines of an NFL game, you have to keep your wits about you.

As the Atlanta Falcons hold a 24-14 lead at halftime of the NFC Championship, Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones has put together another impressive day.
After hauling in one touchdown catch earlier in the game, Julio made an incredible touchdown catch against San Francisco's Tarell Brown to give the Falcons, a 17-7 lead:
Everything was going wrong for the San Francisco 49ers and their proud defense. Julio Jones and the Atlanta Falcons gouged them so often in the early stages of the NFC title game that the 49ers seemed too stunned to respond.
The NFL is a game of opportunities and Matt Ryan took advantage of those opportunities during the first half, but that was all.
In similar fashion to what happened against the Seattle Seahawks, Matt Ryan known as Matty Ice melted.
By half-time Matt Ryan had already destroyed the San Francisco 49ers defense. Ryan was 18 of 24, with 271 passing yards and three touchdowns. His 18Â...
Matt Ryan threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Julio Jones to give the Atlanta Falcons an early 7-0 lead over the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday's NFC championship game.
Ryan moved the Falcons 80 yards on seven plays on Atlanta's opening drive for the early lead.
Ryan completed passes of 13 yards to Jones and 16 yards to Roddy White on the drive.
On second-and-9 from the 49ers...
The huge question that will linger for weeks after this game will be about why the Atlanta Falcons continue to not be able to put teams away after running out to big leads.
The Falcons jumped out to an early 10-0 lead after an early 46 yard bomb from Matt Ryan to Julio Jones and a Matt Bryant field goal.
Julio Jones then scored on a 20 yard fade to put the Falcons...
The Falcons were unable to capture the same magic that happened last week when a 4th-and-4 pass fell to the ground and allowed the 49ers to all but run out the clock and advance to the Super Bowl for the sixth time. The Falcons yet again started off fast by scoring a touchdown on their first drive on a long pass from Matt Ryan to Julio Jones to take a 7-0 lead. They continued their...
