Can we get back to the game please?

In an up and down offseason to say the least, the NFL has seen bold and ludicrous predictions for a season that has yet to come, a bounty scandal in New Orleans, and a multitude of arrests for a varying number of reasons.

Does anyone else besides myself think that this is now becoming a sideshow? All of these off the field antics are taking away from the game. The things being done outside of the gridiron by players, general managers and coaches, that have little or nothing to do with football, are all anyone can talk about. Isn't the reason they're paid to do their job reliant on what happens on the field? Why not get back to focusing on that?

Since the Super Bowl way back in February, there have been 27, yes, 27 arrests made involving NFL players. This is out of control to say the least.  The charges vary from drug possession, speeding and wreckless driving, DUI, to the hard to wrap your mind around instances like Dallas Cowboys' Dez Bryant arrest. Bryant was arrested for assault. Sounds like just another athlete getting into trouble, until you delve deeper and find out that he assaulted his own mother!

These are grown men ladies and gentlemen. These are professionals who represent a team, a franchise, a brand. These are people who are looked up to by small boys and girls the world over.

If you're bad at math (just as I am), let me tell you this. February 5th, Super Bowl Sunday, was a mere 23 weeks ago!

Is it even possible to have this many arrests in one league in such a short amount of time? Shouldn't half of these players be licking their wounds after having a poor season, or living in the gym, getting ready for the next run at the Lombardi Trophy?

Nobody is perfect. Trust me, I know this. People make mistakes, that's why pencils have erasers. Many of the arrests were players who just made silly mistakes and will otherwise have a squeaky clean record after their brief run in with the law. The point I'm trying to make is that this is just happening all too often.

Does the league need to look into more severe punishments? Does the all powerful Mr. Roger Goodell need to hand down more than just a slap on the wrists to players who break the rules? The perception of the league will continue to spiral if nothing is done.

Sure, the NFL is not the only league where players find themselves in trouble; it almost appears as if no league is safe. The question that needs to be asked however, is, what do the other leagues do differently? The numbers don't lie. The other professional leagues just don't have as many players finding themselves taking mugshots nearly as much as the NFL.

One could argue that because the National Football League is the most violent of leagues around, that the players could be more prone to these types of incidents. We could sit here all day and dive into why the numbers are the way they are. The simple fact of the matter is, the NFL has a major problem that looks to be getting out of control.

With social media being such an enormous part of our culture and daily lives, athletes are being put under an even bigger microscope. Players have even received fallout from Tweets. Nobody and nothing is safe anymore. I'm all for social media, as I think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, but the abuse of it can and will lead to bad and negative results.

Players beware. Someone is always watching. In essence, Big Brother does exist. You have the greatest job in the world. You're paid to play a game that you love. Cherish it. Nothing last forever, and one day it will be over. Why not make it last as long as you can? Stay out of trouble, hone your craft and leave behind a game better than when you started. Be the role model you were called to be, and influence the lives of the millions that you encounter with the gifts that you were given.
