NFL Free Agency started Monday, and it appears that the fantasy football hype machine got a tune-up before it started. Hype already out of control on some guys, but a few others deserve it. Six guys that caught our eye so far in free agency: 1. Ryan Griffin, TE, Texans Sleeper status! With Owen Daniels released, huge for Ryan Griffin’s fantasy stock. Bump him up to a TE2 in 2014 (for now). Could G Graham re-sign? — Mike Clay (@MikeClayNFL) March 11, 2014 Keep an eye on this guy in camp/preseason before drafting. Also, the Texans’ quarterback situation needs to shake out. But he is nothing if not a name to know among potential break-out tight ends heading into 2014. 2. Golden Tate, WR, Lions Thought the Lions were in the market for Eric Decker, or a wide receiver in the first round of the NFL Draft, but … Here’s a good blurb on why Golden Tate is going to BLOW UP with the Lions: http://t.co/c0rBLkV2KA — Adam Levitan (@adamlevitan) March 13, 2014 We concur. This should be fun. 3. Darren Sproles, RB, Eagles It will be exciting to see how Chip Kelly uses Sproles this year, and what effect it will have on other Philly play-makers. Time to take LeSean McCoy off the top of my rankings … — Dave Richard (@daverichard) March 13, 2014 I think it’s a one-year thing with Sproles, though. In my opinion, he lost some explosiveness near the end of 2013. He’ll also be 31-years-old this season, and has a lot more mileage than you’d think for someone who was never a feature back. The Saints wore him out. That being said, I think he has one good season — not as good as his best with New Orleans — before falling off more. This season will be fueled by a change of scenery and a chance to prove the Saints’ front office wrong. 4. Toby Gerhart, RB, Jaguars Gets a shot to win a starting running back job in Jacksonville, but I’d temper expectations. Best compliment I’ve seen paid to Toby Gerhart so far is that he’s “not bad.” — Evan Silva (@evansilva) March 12, 2014 Not exactly a ringing endorsement. 5. Dexter McCluster, RB/WR, Titans Don’t get too excited about this, fantasy owners. Dexter McCluster probably has negative value. Replacement player unlikely to cough the ball up as much. More likely to have explosive plays. — Fantasy Douche (@FantasyDouche) March 11, 2014 McCluster also may be fourth in the pecking order when it comes to targets in the Titans’ offense, behind Kendall Wright, Justin Hunter and Nate Washington. Not good for fantasy value. 6. Rashad Jennings, RB, Giants I don’t like Jennings as a fantasy running back, but I might have to … Rashad Jennings is like the quintessential Tom Coughlin back. No flash. Gets-what’s-blocked runner. Pass protects. 1 career lost fumble. — Evan Silva (@evansilva) March 12, 2014 If that’s true, then fantasy football owners are going to have to like Jennings heading into drafts. Because there is nothing Coughlin hates more than a running back who fumbles and improvises too much, and Jennings is everything but those things apparently. Damn it.
