8:30 a.m. ET: We’ve waited for it since the Super Bowl ended — today marks the official start of the 2013 NFL season. Starting at 4 p.m., teams can sign free agents and make the trades you’ve been hearing about official. That means Alex Smith will officially be a Chief, Percy Harvin will officially join Seattle and if all goes right for the Dolphins, Mike Wallace will be signing in Miami. The start of free agency also gives the Patriots more urgency to get a deal done with Wes Welker and Aqib Talib. At 4 p.m., both players are free to sign with any team that gives them a better offer. More players could be cut starting at 4 p.m. as well. Nnamdi Asomugha will almost certainly be released by the Eagles, but the team is waiting for the league start date to do it for salary cap reasons. Stay here for all the latest updates on free agency signings and trades throughout this exciting day. Photo via Facebook/New England Patriots from B/R

NFL.com Reports Welker Will Ultimately Stay

The war of words continues when it pertains to Wes Welker and his destiny this offseason. Vote: Is Wes Welker or Aqib Talib More Likely To Re-Sign With the Patriots?

Patriots Owner Robert Kraft made his feelings about wide receiver Wes Welker known Monday, telling ESPN, “I hope he remains a Patriot for life, just like Tom Brady.” Despite those warm and fuzzy feelings, Welker is currently a free agent. With 118 receptions and six touchdowns during the 2012 regular season, Welker made a solid contribution to the Pats’ offense. According to...

Report: Wes Welker deal with Patriots Nowhere close to being Done

Free agent wide receiver Wes Welker and the New England Patriots reportedly seem to be on two different pages when it comes to his value as a free agent. At 32, Wes Welker has thrived as a slot receiver in New England, totaling over 100 receptions 5 out of the last 6 seasons. Broncos becoming the Super Bowl favorite with Welker signing

He often references...
