Week 17 saw some players have exceptional games. In a year that saw Detroit Lions wide receiver, Calvin Johnson pass Jerry Rice for most receiving yards in a season, today saw a few players have a career day. Unfortunately Minnesota Vikings running back, Adrian Peterson just missed passing Eric Dickerson’s single season rushing record by 9 yards. Here is a list of a few players and what they accomplished today. Drew Brees: In a game that saw the New Orleans Saints lose to the Carolina Panthers 44-38, Saints quarterback Drew Brees threw for 396 yards that made his season passing yard total 5,177. His performance today made him become the first player to eclipse 5,000 yards in back to back seasons. Plus his four touchdown passes gave him a total of 43 this year, which made him become the first player with 40 TD passes in consecutive seasons. Cam Newton: In that same game that saw Drew Brees create a few new records, Panthers QB, Cam Newton also set a record today as well. Newton threw for 248 yards which made his two year career passing yards total of 7,920. He passed Peyton Manning who held the record with 7,874 yards his first two years in the league. Frank Gore: As the San Francisco 49ers locked up the NFC West crown and became the second seed giving them a first round bye in the playoffs, Frank Gore passed 49ers greats Roger Craig and Joe Perry with the franchise best 51 rushing touchdowns. Andrew Luck: In a game that would not move the Indianapolis Colts up in the playoff bracket with a win, but the Houston Texans were looking to secure a first round bye, the Colts won 28-16. In an emotional game for the Colts to see their head coach, Chuck Pagano come back on the sidelines for the first time since his fight with cancer, quarterback Andrew Luck and the Colts stepped up to get a win for coach. Andrew Luck broke Peyton Manning’s franchise record for completions as a rookie, but St. Louis Rams quarterback, Sam Bradford still holds the completions record by a rookie. With two touchdown passes today Luck became the third all time among rookies with 22 TD passes. Eli Manning: The New York Giants beat up the Philadelphia Eagles 42-7, but failed to make the playoffs. The reigning Super Bowl Champs will not have a chance to go for the repeat. Not that Eli Manning is one for personal goals over team goals, but he did throw a career high five touchdown passes in the game. Manning went 13 of 21 for 208 yards and had no interceptions.
