We shared the news earlier today of two veteran kickers set to compete for the Cleveland Browns kicker job. Now, one is out of the running and the Browns are bringing along another youngster. Dan Carpenter, former Miami Dolphins kicker who has been cut three times in the last three weeks, opted instead to sign today with the Buffalo Bills. It appears that ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter first broke the news on Twitter this evening (tweet). Buffalo had a sudden need at kicker when sixth-round pick Dustin Hopkins injured his groin earlier today. Now, joining long-time veteran Billy Cundiff in the competition for the Browns opening will be 23-year-old Giorgio Tavecchio. Signed by the Green Bay Packers in March to compete with incumbent Mason Crosby, he was cut last week. Tavecchio, a native Italian, played collegiately for the University of California at Berkeley. He signed as an undrafted free agent in 2012 with the San Francisco 49ers, but did not make the final 53-man cut. Just like this season in competing with Crosby, reports indicated that he gave a tough run for David Akers’ job last year. One of his weaknesses might be his overall leg strength, yet he was far more accurate than Crosby in camp, according to Fox Sports Wisconsin (link). At the very least, it means the Browns won’t simply be handing over the crucial kicking job to the 33-year-old Cundiff, best known for a miss in the 2012 playoffs.
