With Cleveland Browns rookies scheduled to report to training camp Friday in Berea, three draft picks remain unsigned over constant deliberations. The main sticking point between the team and No. 6 overall selection DE/OLB Barkevious Mingo appears to be over offset language in his rookie contract. Here’s what The Plain Dealer’s Mary Kay Cabot explained: Specifically, the Browns want offset language in the deal, and Mingo’s side does not. Offset language addresses a player who is released before his fully-guaranteed four-year contract has expired. With such language, the original team only has to pay the difference between what it owed the player and what he’ll make from a new team. Mingo has looked to receive a similar deal as former teammate LSU defensive back Morris Claiborne, who was the No. 6 pick in last year’s draft by the Dallas Cowboys. On par with the rookie wage scale instituted in 2011, Claiborne signed for four years and $16.26 million with a fifth-year option. Why exactly a team and its high-profile rookie are sparring over minute details related to release information appears to be quite peculiar. The Browns also have yet to reach deals with their second-round cornerback Leon McFadden and troubled seventh-round defensive end Armonty Bryant. The Akron Beacon Journal’s Nate Ulrich wrote that it shouldn’t be a problem for the team to reach a deal with the latter two players, but it will continue to be more complicated with Mingo. Both sides have continued to indicate that Mingo should be signed by the start of official training camp in one week, on July 25. Only three of the top 10 picks from this past April’s draft have signed with their teams, with none of those signed players owning offset language in their respective contracts. Only one of the top nine players last season had such language as well. [Related: NFL News: Trent Richardson “I have no pain at all”; will be ready for training camp]
