San Francisco 49ers safety Donte Whitner was fined $21,000 for his big hit he laid on St. Louis Rams receiver Chris Givens last week, and he is not taking his fine lightly. Over the past week, Whitner has taken to twitter to express his displeasure with the NFL starting a #LegalHitner hashtag campaign as well as creating T-shirts to support his cause. Today he took his campaign to the next level. Donte Whitner is changing his name to Donte Hitner. Whitner announced his desire to change his name via twitter on Tuesday claiming that he was thinking of changing his name to Hitner and said he even asked his mother about it. By Wednesday morning, the 26-year old had made it official. Whitner is just the latest famous athlete to undergo a name change. In the past athletes including Kareen Abdul-Jabbar, Muhammad Ali and more recently Chad Ochocinco and Metta World Peace have decided to make name changes. I doubt the NFL will appreciate Whitner’s name change but I doubt that he will be fined for it. What do you think about his name change? Should the 49ers take him seriously?
