The first set of preseason games kick off this week and there's plenty of news circulating around the league with these matchups looming.
First we must mention the death of Garrett Reid, Andy's son. Days after committing suicide at the team headquarters for training camp, the funeral was held on Tuesday, with close to 1,000 people attending.
The Philadelphia Eagles are going to be popular in the NFL odds because of all their individual talent, but we can't help but wonder how Reid will cope. If he finds the right support systems and his players go to war for him, this could be a special season for the Eagles.
There was some more hoopla in the New York Jets camp as the continuous fighting among players finally came to a head. Rex Ryan decided he had had enough and doled out his punishment in the form of extensive running.
This is a good sign. Ryan, always the wise-cracker, need to instill a sense of seriousness and commitment into this group.
In terms of injuries, probably the biggest news of the week surrounds rookie running back Trent Richardson.
Richardson has a sore left knee and there's a great chance that he'll sit out Cleveland's preseason opener against Detroit. For a team that's certainly going to rely on Richardson to carry a hefty workload, this is not a promising sign in the least.
There's also been injuries to Oakland Raiders back Mike Goodson and Carolina Panthers wideout Steve Smith, though the injury to Smith is less serious. He has a bruised knee and sat out of practice just as a precaution.
As for Kevin Kolb, who injures his ribs in the Hall of Fame game against New Orleans, he's apparently just fine and will be able to play in Friday's exhibition versus Kansas City.
