One of the more interesting matchups of the first week of the NFL season is the Cincinnati Bengals at the New England Patriots. The Bengals surprised everyone by winning the AFC North last season, going a perfect 6-0 against the other three teams in the conference. The Patriots once again finished on top of the AFC East, but it was the New York Jets who made it further into the postseason. Looking at the NFL odds for this game the Patriots are 4.5 point favorites over the Bengals with the total currently sitting at 45 points.

Surprisingly the Cincinnati Bengals are somehow flying under the radar heading into the 2010 season, as all the talk in the AFC has been about the Jets, Ravens, and Colts. A big reason for that is the Bengals had a poor showing in their first round playoff game against the Jets, but this is a dangerous team that has made some nice additions this offseason, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
The key to the Bengals success in 2009 was the strong running game behind veteran Cedric Benson and an improving defense, but don’t be surprised to see the Bengals open up the offense more this season, as they added wide out Terrell Owens and drafted slot receiver Jordan Shipley and tight end Jermaine Gresham. While it will likely take some time for Shipley to play a big role in the offense, I look for Gresham to make an immediate impact this season, as he gives quarterback Carson Palmer the best threat he has ever had at the tight end position.

There are also a lot of people sleeping on the New England Patriots this season, as the Jets have really taken over all the headlines in that division. I think teams better watch out for the Patriots this season, as I think quarterback Tom Brady is ready for a monster season in 2010. Brady came into the 2009 season off a knee injury and really didn’t look like the same quarterback that we have seen in the past. This year Brady comes in healthy and I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if this offense looked very similar to that of 2007 when they cruised to a perfect regular season record.

The only thing that is going to keep the Patriots from being that elite team in the AFC this season, is the defensive side of the ball. The Patriots are very young and recently suffered a big blow in the secondary with the injury to corner Leigh Bodden. Still you can never count out a team coached by Bill Belichick, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Patriots defense also improved this season.
Looking at the Odds: This is a very tough game to predict as I feel like both of these teams are going to be very good this season, but I think you have to take the Patriots to cover the spread at home in this one. The Patriots offense should be locked and loaded to start the season, and while the defense may struggle, I think they are good enough to keep the Bengals from keeping up with the Pats offense. My final score prediction is New England 27 Cincinnati 20.
