There are multiple paths to greatness. To become a quarterback in the college game countless signal callers have had to engage in a competition to get a chance to lead their team to a national championship. In the pros, fans have seen players such as Peyton Manning come into the league as a number one overall pick, starting in his rookie season as the new hope for his franchise. There are also players such as Tom Brady who was thrust into the spotlight after his team’s starter got injured. There are also those who are entrusted to replace a legend and create new histories such as Aaron Rodgers.

The quarterback class of 2012 figure to replicate all these roads, even if all of them don’t end in glory. First rounders Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Brandon Weeden have been handed the reigns of their respected franchises and will be expected to spark the fires of hope. Luck and Griffin especially have their fans excited for the future after solid (yet restricted) preseason debuts. Fellow first rounder Ryan Tannehill comes in to start as Miami’s next hope to fill the vast shoes left by legend Dan Marino. Fending off challenges from Matt Moore and David Garrard during the summer and preseason, Tannehill has a lot of pressure on his shoulders and a lot of critics who will be monitoring his every move.

Possibly the most impressive rookie quarterback to be starting the season however is third rounder Russell Wilson. Wilson has created a stir in the Pacific Northwest by taking the starting job from the hands of free agent acquisition Matt Flynn and previous starter Tarvaris Jackson. Wilson also has his critics but they instead focus not on any lack of ability, but rather his short stature. Any perceived shortcomings have been revoked however as Wilson has lit up the preseason for the Seahawks and figures to be an intriguing story as the season goes on. Eagles rookie quarterback Nick Foles may not be the starter for this Philadelphia team entering the season, but his play in the preseason has surprised many, leading fans across the league to believe he will see the field if Michael Vick goes down.

There are many ways to become a starting quarterback in the National Football League. There is only one way to remain one; win.
