Multiple news sources are reporting that the Philadelphia Eagles have met with Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly and that the two sides will meet again early next week. When asked about joining the NFL coaching ranks prior to the National Championship game, Kelly told reporters that leaving “is not an option.” Something changed. The Eagles have now interviewed six coaching candidates and plan to interview with former Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith as the search for a replacement for Andy Reid continues. Kelly has coached the Fighting Irish for three seasons, putting together a 28-11 overall record. He lead Notre Dame to a 12-0 regular season mark and a trip to the National Championship game where they were destroyed by Alabama 42-14.Kelly was hired in December of 2009 and was the previous head coach at the University of Cincinnati. It’s difficult to know whether Kelly’s flirtation with a head coaching job in the NFL is genuine or it’s a calculated moved to leverage himself for...

Heading into the weekend of week 17, I had a Twitter exchange with Da Bears Blog wherein he indicated he did not believe Smith’s job was in jeopardy, regardless of whether Chicago won or lost in week 17 against Detroit. The Bears went on to win the game, but Smith was fired regardless of the 10-6 record posted by the Bears. I thought there was a decent chance Smith’s job was...
