Washington Redskins defensive back Phillip Buchanon was suspended four games by the NFL on Tuesday for an undisclosed violation of league policy.
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan told reporters Buchanon had been suspended but did not give a reason for the ban. However, Buchanon has not had recent trouble with the law, and violations of the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs usually warrant four-game suspensions.
The suspension comes one day after Buchanon was re-signed by the Redskins. He was used as a nickel back last season, collecting 49 tackles and two interceptions while playing all 16 games.
Buchanon entered the NFL in 2002 and has 20 interceptions and eight return TDs for Oakland, Houston, Tampa Bay, Detroit and Washington.
Buchanon can continue to practice with the team until the week leading up to its season opener Sept. 11 vs. the New York Giants. He also will miss games vs. Arizona, Dallas and St. Louis before a bye in Week 5. His first game could be vs. ...
