The Headline: Billy Cundiff makes a last second field goal to seal the Redskins win.

The Story:

Sometimes you have to feel sorry for Billy Cundiff, leading up to the final kick of the game, Cundiff had missed three kicks on the afternoon and this was his first attempt at a game winning field goal since that little miss he had for the Ravens at the end of last year. Fortunately for Cundiff, this kick did not sail wide left, or wide right, nor did it encounter a freak gust of wind that sent it back the wrong way. While no team should ever be happy with losing a game, Tampa Bay can take plenty of solace in the guts they showed to fight back and put themselves in a position to win the game. Trailling 21-6 at halftime, the Buccaneers got themselves back into the lead but with seven seconds to go, Cundiff nailed his critical 41 yarder to send the Redskins to 2-2.

Key Stat: Third Down Conversions: Tampa Bay 3/12, Washington 2/11

Normally I’ll pick a stat here which shows why one team won the game but here I just couldn’t get past the fact that both offenses struggled so much on third down. Both offenses can best be described as units that are “in development” and it shows that they still have plenty to work on in terms of managing downs and distance.

Key Play: Robert Griffin III, 15 yard scramble in the fourth quarter

On the game winning drive, this play got the Redskins into field goal range and capped off a stellar drive for Griffin. Right before this play you could see him gesturing to the bench that his headset wasn’t working properly leaving the rookie in the dark in one of the game’s most important moments. On what looked to be a broken screen play, Griffin managed to get the ball, roll out to the right and take it all the way down to the Buccaneers 26 which, a few plays later lead to the field goal.

Man of the Match: Billy Cundiff

1 of 4 Field Goals, 3 XP

Ok maybe I’ve been a bit harsh on Cundiff over the last few months for his miss in the AFC Championship and subsequent release by the Ravens. But on this day, despite missing three kicks, he made the one that counts so he will get credit where it is due and he can enjoy his man of the match award for making the game winning kick.
