NEW YORK (35) d INDIANAPOLIS (9) The Headline: Luck comes crashing back to earth as the Jets defense steps up The Story: What to do when your team looks like it is in total disarray and the season is teetering on the edge of a cliff about to completely collapse? What about when your starting quarterback and his backup both are struggling to look like competent players on a pop warner level? You respond by going back to basics and belting the crap out of an up and coming team in your home stadium. With some major questions about the passing game thanks to poor quarterback play and a lack of well known receivers, the Jets turned their offense over to their backfield and it paid dividends as they sliced through the Colts defense. Shonn Greene was the bell cow on the day rushing 32 times for 161 yards and scoring three times while Joe McKnight was able to pitch in with a few big plays of his own including a key 61 yard run. Mark Sanchez did not have to do a whole lot and he played the Tim Tebow role perfectly going 11/18 for 82 yards and two scores. The guy best suited to the Tebow role, Tebow himself, even managed to complete a pass before the fourth quarter which would have no doubt surprised everyone in the stadium and watching on TV. For the Colts they went from the ultimate high, upsetting the Packers last week in an astonishing comeback to losing to what many saw as a team that was right on their level. Andrew Luck was unspectacular overall as his offense was kept out of the end zone and he had 3 turnovers on the afternoon. Key Stat: New York Jets: 8 penalties for 110 yards In all honesty a team with this type of piss-poor discipline will find themselves on the opposite end of the scoreboard, especially when the other team only commits 3 penalties for 27 yards. Two penalties on the Colts second possession basically sent them into field goal range on their own and twice penalties overturned Antonio Cromartie pick six’s. On the day this was the only negative stat from the Jets and, being a loyal Patriots fan along with Coley, it is our duty to point out any negatives we can about the Jets so, since we are in a tie on top of the AFC East, we’ll just have to use this as some goofy form of trash talk and point out to the Jets they will need to be a hell of a lot more disciplined in the future. Key Play: Shonn Greene 10 yard touchdown run in the second quarter This play summed up the Colts afternoon in one simple counter run straight up the gut of their defense. Greene took the ball from Sanchez, ran right side into a gaping hole created by his defenders and carried three defenders into the end zone. He only just made it there but he still scored a touchdown to give his team a big lead. Man of the Match: Shonn Greene 32 Carries, 161 yards, 3 touchdowns I feel dirty giving the Jets this much credit for playing well, mostly of my New England allegiances but in this case you have to make an exception given the spanking they handed out to the Colts. The chief destroyer was Shonn Greene who has had his struggles in his career but in this game he was nothing short of excellent.
