TAMPA BAY (38) d KANSAS CITY (10) The Headline: Buccaneers pound sorry Chiefs The Story: An impressive defensive performance combined with the good side of the offense coming out to play lead to a resounding 28 point win for the Buccaneers who moved to 2-3 on the season. After winning their first game, the Buccaneers had struggled, losing their last three but the battered, bruised and demoralised Chiefs were just what they needed to get back in the winners’ circle. A slow first half had the game on a knife’s edge but the second half was all Tampa Bay as they outscored their opponents 31-7 featuring a defensive touchdown by Ronde Barber who is still getting it done despite his advanced years. For the Chiefs it was tough going all around as they were without their starting quarterback Matt Cassel, who had been criticised for his ineffectiveness so far this year. His replacement Brady Quinn was not much better only throwing for 180 yards and being intercepted twice. There was not much support from the running game either as Jamaal Charles, the NFL’s leading rusher was held to 40 yards on 12 carries. Key Stat: Offensive Touchdowns: Tampa Bay 4, Kansas City 0 The Chiefs struggled to get anything going all game and it shows with the fact they were not able to put the ball in the end zone at all. Their one touchdown (which came in garbage time) was off a blocked punt which the Buccaneers responded to by scoring another 17 points just to be on the safe side. Key Play: Ronde Barber 78 yard interception return for a touchdown While this play didn’t put the Buccaneers over the top, it was certainly the highlight of the game as we got to see the oldest defensive back in the league making a very nice play. For a long time it looked like the ball would be incomplete as E.J. Biggers prevented the completion and while it was bouncing around the bodies on the ground, Barber made a fingertip grab and raced down the sideline for the touchdown. Man of the Match: Josh Freeman 15/26, 328 yards, 3 touchdowns An early interception by Justin Houston had Buccaneers fans nervous that it was going to be another one of those days, where he struggles but that was the only negative on the day as Freeman went nuts on the Chiefs secondary hitting them with bomb after bomb leading to a 300+ yard day and three scores to show everyone what he is capable of. Freeman certainly has the look of a confidence player and when he gets on a roll he is borderline unstoppable, especially with the weapons he now has at his disposal. He spread the ball around effectively finding six different receivers with his favourite targets being Mike Williams who had over 100 yards and Vincent Jackson who caught two touchdowns.
