NFL Week 7 losers: Bills defense comes up small, Jared Goff disappoints

With nearly all of the Week 7 games in the books, here's a look at some of the biggest losers from around the NFL.

Buffalo Bills defense: QB Josh Allen and the Bills offense may have waited three quarters to show up Sunday, but their defense was non-existent virtually the entire game against the New England Patriots. Buffalo's D allowed a Patriots offense averaging 12 points a game to put 29 on the scoreboard in a brutal four-point loss.

New England scored on three of their first four possessions, and Buffalo forced them to punt only twice in the second half. Meanwhile, the Patriots' fledgling QB Mac Jones looked like an All-Pro, completing 83.3 percent of his passes (25-of-30) for 272 yards (9.1) with two touchdowns, zero interceptions and a robust 126.7 passer rating.

The unit won't have much time to rest up as a matchup with QB Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on "Thursday Night Football" is right around the corner.

Jared Goff, quarterback, Detroit Lions: After looking like a darkhorse MVP candidate through the first six weeks of 2023, Goff looked very mortal against a tough Baltimore Ravens defense in a blowout loss, 38-6. Goff had easily his worst day of the season, going 33-of-53 for 284 yards and an interception.

The Ravens harassed Goff all day, pressuring him 16 times and posting five sacks. When pressured, Goff crumbled, finishing 8-of-16 for 82 yards and an interception while recording a dreadful 39.1 passer rating. Goff had taken only 10 sacks entering Week 7 and will now have to regroup ahead of a "Monday Night Football" contest against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 8.

Jordan Love, quarterback, Green Bay Packers: Despite going up against a Denver Broncos squad ranked last in points allowed, Love led a Packers offense that was shut out in the first half and managed only 17 points by game's end. Furthermore, with the game in the balance, a late interception sealed a two-point Packers loss.

Love began the 2023 campaign red-hot, throwing six touchdowns and zero interceptions over two weeks. However, since then, he's thrown four touchdowns to seven interceptions over four games, which has to be a troubling sign for the Packers.

Josh McDaniels, head coach, Las Vegas Raiders: The Raiders fell flat on both sides of the ball in an ugly 30-12 loss to the Chicago Bears, and the blame should fall squarely on McDaniels.

The Raiders offense never got going thanks to McDaniels's uninspired choice to replace injured QB Jimmy Garoppolo by starting veteran Brian Hoyer, who went only 17-of-32 for 129 yards with two interceptions, posting a horrendous 37.1 passer rating. Meanwhile, their defense didn't look ready to play, victimized by undrafted rookie QB Tyson Bagent (21-of-29, 162 yards, 1 TD) and backup running back D'Onta Foreman (16 carries, 89 yards, 2 TD).

Las Vegas may be 3-4 on the year, but they're arguably the most inconsistent team in the NFL, and it might eventually cost McDaniels his job.

Austin Ekeler, running back, Los Angeles Chargers: Ekeler has not looked like himself since coming back from an ankle sprain, and the trend continued in a Week 7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. While he received 14 carries, he was nearly invisible, recording 45 rushing yards for a poor 3.2 yards per carry. Meanwhile, he was targeted twice in the passing game, posting one catch for only a one-yard gain.

After finishing with 27 yards (14 carries) in his return to the lineup in Week 6, Ekeler's performance against the Chiefs gives a little hope that he'll continue to improve. However, the now 2-4 Chargers will need much more from the standout back to turn around their season.

Jahan Dotson, wide receiver, Washington Commanders: The Commanders were woefully unprepared to play in Week 7, so the 14-7 loss was on the team. However, given the opportunity to pick his team up despite its lackluster performance, Dotson didn't rise to the occasion with the game on the line.

With the Commanders still trailing by a score and facing fourth down from the Giants' seven-yard line, Dotson dropped a pass from quarterback Sam Howell near the two-yard line, ending Washington's hopes of a comeback. The ball Howell delivered wasn't perfect, and the catch had a certain degree of difficulty, but it's a grab you expect a former first-rounder to make, especially in the clutch.

Dotson caught 35 of 61 targets for 523 yards (14.9) and seven touchdowns during his rookie season but has run into a sophomore slump in year two, recording only 22 catches for 183 yards (8.3) and one touchdown through seven games.

Kareem Jackson, defensive back, Denver Broncos: Jackson delivered a vicious hit to the head of Green Bay Packers tight end Luke Musgrave, resulting in his ejection from the game. The irresponsible act is nothing new for Jackson, who was booted from the Broncos Week 2 contest for a similar hit on Washington Commanders tight end Logan Thomas.

With two disqualifications and over $89,000 in fines under his belt seven weeks in the season, Jackson has to be on thin ice with the NFL. Whether the most recent incident will result in a suspension for Jackson remains to be seen.
